Movies that you thought would be terrible but actually not that bad

I just finished watching Underwold: Blood Wars and honestly I didn't have a high expectation, but it turns out to be a rather well-made movie.

Especially considering that it's a FIFTH installment of an often harshly criticized franchise. They didn't need to make it this good, but they did. Overdelivered if I must say.

From my recent memory here is some other movies I found better than what I initially suspected:

Angry Birds the Movie
Paterson
127 Hours
21 Jump Street
Tropic Thunder

What's your list?

Some James Bond films have gotten unfair criticism. Quantum of Solace was really good. Spectre wasn't that bad. Die Another Day was cheesy but still had great action, same with Octopussy and Moonraker. Timothy Dalton's films were underrated, his Bond was similar to Daniel Craig and the closest to Ian Fleming's Bond in the novels.

That's true. However, what I meant was not about critics, but movies you expected to be bad, yet after you watched it you found it surprisingly quite good.

I mean, try Angry Birds the Movie:

A movie based on a videogame tends to be bad. That's a given.

But a movie based on a MOBILE GAME about kamikaze birds catapulting into a bunch of green pigs???

The premise of the movie alone was already so stupid nobody with a right mind would expect more than a desperate attempt at luring children who plays too much iPad.

Yet I found the actual movie was pretty good. It was funny and touched some quite deep and relevant topics. It arguably was even deeper than the simple and overly politically correct Moana.

It genuinely surprised me. My 4yo kid repeat-view this movie more than any other animations except maybe Frozen.

James Bond movies are kinda guaranteed decent entertainment. Even the mediocre ones tend to have big budget, polished production and great cinematography.

So I don't think most people really expect a terrible Bond movie before they see it and then feeling surprised because it turned out good.

It's all about the head shape. Roger Moore and Pierce Brosnan have that bond look. That was what you meant subconsciously, I am betting.

What do you think about survivor (2015)?

?

Survivor with pierce brosnan and milla jovovich

I still have to watch that.

Tell me your opinion after you'll see it.

What do you think about the final chapter?

I knew you would say something about Resident Evil. Lol. I already gave my assesment on the movie here:

In essence, I expected better. Thus unlike Underworld: Blood Wars, I think it underdelivers.

What do you think about Milla's daughter, Ever and her performance as the red queen in the final chapter?

Tropic Thunder is one of my favourite comedies.

Mine:

Batman v Superman
Office Christmas Party
Patriots Day
World War Z
Evil Dead (2013)

I'm not a fan of zombie movies but I was actually able to get into World War Z .

I hope they finally get to make the sequel.

Ikr. Tropic Thunder is so great I can't believe it's a Ben Stiller movie!

About BvS, I was hyped so much it was a let down for me. The same happened for Suicide Squad. The trailers were sick! The hype went through the roof! The end product was... meh.

I didn't really care about typical zombie movies, so I was on low expectation mode for World War Z. It's my wife that's actually insisted on watching the movie. Well, it stars Brad Pitt... it won't be so bad I guess. Well, in the end, it still didn't make me care about the zombie genre. The one made me slightly interested was in fact a Korean movie titled Train to Busan. A little better than what I expected.

Other titles you mentioned I haven't watched. Thanks for pointing them out!

I don't really like comicbook/superhero movies so I wasn't really interested in BvS, but when I finally watched it I was surprised at how much I liked it, it's one of the better comicbook movies I've seen. Suicide Squad was just plain bad though.

Yeah, Train To Busan is really good, it's almost like it happens in the same world as WWZ, the way the zombies act is so similar. I'm a big fan of the zombie genre so I tend to check out every offering and most are pretty bad but there are some real gems out there too.

John Carter was a huge box-office bomb and didn't get good reviews but I thought it was pretty good.

Same here.

I watched Power Ranger a few weeks ago and you were right! Way better than what I expected. The direction was tight, acting was overall solid. Very surprising!

Action scenes were quite exciting too... especially the ending WWE-style giant robot battle. Better than Pacific Rim, I say! I was just hoping for more of those fights instead of the lame running and jumping over cliffs ripped straight from the Matrix.

I didn't care about Beauty and the Beast though. I'm too nostalgic for the original animation version I just can't apreciate the live-action remake. I was more excited for the Lion King live-action remake because it is my favorite movie ever, but after watching Beauty and the Beast I'm not sure about it now.
