Intellectually Challenging Films.

What movies did you see that were so deep or meaningful that you had to watch them again pretty much straight away?

Here are some of mine.

Bladerunner
Donnie Darko
The Fall
Brazil
Man From Earth
Primer
Fight Club
The Usual Suspects
Pi
Mr Nobody

reply

Hmm... Well, not so much to rewatch right away, but deep and/or intellectual:

Blade Runner
Life of Pi
Interstellar
The Martian (not quite deep, but scientific and somewhat intellectual)
Les Miserables (not quite as intellectual as the others, but this time emotionally deep)

reply

12 monkeys
2001 Space Odyssey
Blue velvet
Dark city
Inception
The fountain
Jacobs ladder
Cloud atlas
Dr strangelove
Dog day afternoon
Metropolis
A beautiful Mind
Fight club
Apocalypse now
Goodwill hunting
12 angry men
Citizen Kane
It's a wonderful life

reply

The Imitation Game
Spotlight
Truth
The Insider
Silenced

reply

Spotlight was fantastic. Silenced and the Imitation Game are already on my 'must get round to watching sometime' list and I hadn't heard of the other two so will look out for them.

reply

It was, it was gripping . You won't be disappointed in the others. These are all fact-based.

reply

Primer for sure

reply

Jackass The Movie.

reply

Inception - never did understand it

reply

Goofy flick

Ex Machina

I repeat view this movie for about 4 to 5 days. It's so deep and well acted, well shot, well directed. In every repetition I gain new insight and new prespective about the characters, their motivations and what was in their minds. Really good stuffs.

I recommend this movie for all sci-fi lovers, or anyone who interested in "technological singularity" (that is a point when artificial intelligence is getting more intelligent than human so it's output impossible to be out-thinked).

reply

I loved this movie. We saw it in the theater and we couldn't wait to rewatch it. I agree with your assessment: well acted, well shot, well directed.

reply

I just hope there more movies like this but with no nudity or gore (graphic violence) because it's awkward to watch this movie together with parents or nephews or other family members.

It would be great if we can show this at school / classroom and have discussions about artificial intelligence, singularity, ethics and whatnot. But as it is, well, it would lead to different kind of discussion.

reply

Agreed! I don't mind the more adult stuff but it does make it impossible to watch with a family. It doesn't get weirder than watching sex scenes with your parents.

reply

I agree; this was a great film. General Hux meets Poe Dameron under quite different circumstances.

reply

Haneke
Kubrick
Lynch
Von Trier
Aronofsky

Gilliam
Nolan

reply

Michael Haneke is my absolute favorite director , only after Bergman. Both directors' films are intellectually challenging.
