Posts on social media say former U.S. President Donald Trump was “the first president in modern history” who “did not start a new war.” There have, however, been other U.S. presidents in modern history who did not enter the country into a new war.
If we consider the Korean War, the Vietnam War, the Gulf War, the war in Afghanistan and the Iraq War, Trump joins Barack Obama, Bill Clinton, Ronald Reagan, Jimmy Carter, Gerald Ford, Richard Nixon, John F. Kennedy and Dwight D. Eisenhower in not having officially brought the United States into a new war since 1945.
More conservatively, if we consider these five wars as well as other military operations listed above, the presidents who have not started a new war or been involved in escalating or starting a new military operation would include Trump (if we consider action in Syria an extension to the Obama administration’s presence), Carter and Ford.
The claim has been explored by USA Today (here) who also found Trump was not alone in not bringing the country into new wars, and Newsweek, who found he was the first since Carter not to enter U.S. troops into new conflict (here).
VERDICT
False. Just four of the 13 presidents in office between 1945 and 2020 -- Harry S. Truman, Lyndon B. Johnson, George H. W. Bush and George W. Bush – officially brought the country into new full-scale wars (Korea, Vietnam, the Persian Gulf, Afghanistan, Iraq). If we also consider other military interventions, Carter and Ford join Trump in not starting or escalating existing foreign conflicts with U.S. military involvement.

another warmonging lib, shame on you

reply

People like yourself dismiss that claim as completely false without considering the implications that it had been 40 years since such a claim could be made about a president. Even then, it's not a coincidence that Ford and Carter, the other two that fit the definition in that "fact checking," served back to back after the Vietnam War when warmongering was decisively not in vogue. With the exception of Trump, that's a whole lot of military intervention in the meantime and without the post war conditions of Vietnam, Trump would probably have been the only one on that list.

As usual, "fact checking" is highly misleading.

reply

another warmonging liberal, what a cancer you are

reply

That's an unexpected reply given my post.

reply

Are you retarded (sorry if you are)?

reply

Carter, Bush Sr, Clinton, Bush Jr, Obama and Biden = 17 Wars (Zero Assassination attempts)

Trump = Zero Wars (3 Assassination attempts)

The Bushes = RINOs

RINO = Democrats in Disguise posing and pretending to be Republicans

reply

Funny, I didn't see any of you republican assholes out protesting and picketing back when the Iraq war was going on. It was all democrats and liberals who were the ones doing that.

Instead, you all were trying to cancel the Dixie Chicks when they were the first celebrities to protest the Iraq war. You all were also the ones trying to change "French Fries" to "Freedom Fries" when France protested against the Iraq war. And let's not forget when Sean Hannity was calling anyone against the Iraq war as being un-American.

So please stop trying to gaslight everyone into believing that you all were always against the Iraq war when everyone alive back then knows you and the rest of you MAGAs are completely full of shit.

reply

Do you actually believe that someone can’t be anti-war unless they’re publicly protesting? …
You’re either naive or a willful idiot.

Those “Libs/Dems” were only protesting because of their sympathy for terrorists.

Don’t conflate real peacemakers with sympathizers. Today, “they” are still doing the same. And yes, that is un-American. They should be protesting the illegal mass border invasion of our country.

Back then, the USA and the world was deceived by “the real perpetrators” but some of us knew who they were so there was no point in publicly protesting.

reply

Don't forget "cut and run"

https://www.heritage.org/middle-east/report/us-military-policy-iraq-cut-and-run-disaster-the-us-and-the-middle-east

"Tough times demand a steady hand, clear thinking, and firm resolve from the Bush Administration and from Congress. The American people should expect President Bush to finish the job he started and Congress to provide the support needed to get the task done."

That "task" ain't gonna get "done" in the next 6,000 years...

reply

The parties have switched... it happens all the time.

reply

that was was also approved by democrats.

reply

In it's latest incarnation, yes. It wasn't always that way.

reply

It's so weird. They used to call the right the warhawks just 20 years ago. My how times have changed.

It's like 20 years ago, people were piling on Bush for starting an "unnecessary war" with Iraq over false pretenses, when in fact he was backed by nearly everyone in the government, and many of us in the US saw it as payback for 9/11. For years they called Republicans "war hawks" because of the War on Terror.

Then in the past few years, you have Obama and Hillary starting the wars with the "Arab Spring," then Trump wipes out ISIS in just one year instead of coddling them like their daddy Obama was, he doesn't start any new wars and even ends a few; and then the moment the Democrap oligarchy takes back the White House, suddenly we got a war over in the Ukraine they're using as a smokescreen to launder money.

reply

This comment doesn't seem apt for today's realities. What war is the US fighting for anybody to be going on about warhawks? Or, to respond to the OP, what wars do liberals want to fight? The only "wars" being fought today is the cons war against women and differently-gendered people. They simply can't help thinking about sex and how to control it in other people. It's like part of them is still living in the 19th century.

reply

It's not democrats or republicans. It's the corrupt political establishment that is beholding to the military industrial complex. THIS is one reason why they hate Trump and built this propaganda campaign against him.

reply

"beholding to the military industrial complex."

OMG you really ARE a friggin' commie!

Peace through Strength. Learn it. Love it. Live it.

reply

Are you really that stupid?

That was rhetorical.

reply

Its like unelected life-longers that are really in control of the country...the elected officials are figure heads.

Like who exactly authors these 1000+ page bills that "We have to pass to find out what's inside"???

reply

Exactly and these retards are too dumb to realize it.

reply

Politicians do the bidding of the people that got them into office? STOP THE PRESSES!

It's a small club and you ain't in it... Carrot Top...

We're always going to have wars, some hotter, some colder, but if "conservatives" genuinely want "fewer" wars, the biggest thing they can do is ditch their immaculate F-350 dually's they use to drive back and forth to the liquor store, and get a 4-cylinder Japanese rice burner like a Corolla or a Civic.

But then Jethro and Cletus might not let you sit at the lunch table with them.
