Christopher Columbus was a Sephardic Jew from Western Europe, Spanish scientists said on Saturday, after using DNA analysis to tackle a centuries-old mystery.

Several countries have argued over the origins and the final burial place of the divisive figure who led Spanish-funded expeditions from the 1490s onward, opening the way for the European conquest of the Americas.

Miguel Lorente said they had confirmed previous theories that the remains in Seville Cathedral belonged to Columbus.

Trump discovered "Occupied America."

"America is known, all throughout the world, as 'Occupied America.' "

I must have had a Rip Van Winkle nap... what year is it today?

He would sound more classy if he called it "Vichy America."

reply

Here is Trump not giving a shit about the folks he bussed in to his rally...Good times!

At the end of the event, many attendees reportedly discovered they had been stranded by shuttle services several miles from their cars and were forced to either wait for alternative transportation or walk back on their own.

reply

Maybe SomoanJoe need to help you with that punchline, I have no idea what you are trying to say.

reply

Not peer-reviewed.

Whatever he was, he committed horrific atrocities against the native population in Hispaniola including cutting off their hands if they didn't meet a gold-gathering quota and selling 13-year-olds as sex slaves. The entire population was decimated within a few short years.

Columbus, Hitler and Stalin are not to be admired.

reply

Mel Brooks SO has to do a bit with Jewish Columbus... but Mel's 98...

reply

Oh please. I'm so tired of you retards judging history from your high horse. Human history is a story of conquest. Grow up.

reply

Love your neighbor as yourself has been around for 2,000 years, pal.

reply

So no conquest over the last 2000yrs? Are you retarded?

reply

You're justifying atrocities.

reply

I'm not justifying anything. History is what it is. A story of conquest. You woke idiots just like to politicize whatever fits the narrative.

reply

You're justifying genocide, also.

reply

How is any of the previous few posts "politicizing" ?
What exactly is your objection to people acknowledging that there were atrocities / crimes ?

Are you defending Columbus out of some kind of loyalty? ie because he was "your side" ?

And if you're not justifying what did you mean by " Human history is a story of conquest . Grow up" ?

reply

It's history. It's to be studied and learned from. Not judged by today's political perspectives. Columbus did not invent the concept. Just as slavery was not invented just to oppress Africans in the American South.

reply

Just by those who are evil. You wanna support evil? Go right ahead, son.

No, I'm not retarded.

Are you a cocking sucking MAGAt incel? You sure post like one.

reply

Evil? So you are retarded, got it.

Only incels throw around the term "incel" as a pejorative.

reply

CraigC makes a point in his post above.

Riddle me this: which of these is uglier: Christopher Columbus in 1492, or Plessy vs Ferguson in 1953?

Or is it Dobbs in 2024?

reply

Plessy v. Ferguson was in 1896, you're off by half a century. And why was it ugly? Humans instinctively organize themselves around shared traits.

reply

Plessy was still law in 1953.

reply

Columbus is the precursor to both genocide in the Americas and the Atlantic Slave trade.

reply

If the Ottomans hadn't taken Constantinople we may have never heard of Columbus. But the Ottomans were going to get it sooner or later, and then there would be another guy sailing west to reach Asia... just delayed a few decades...

reply

I disagree with the outcome since you're assuming any person/group would've done the same as Columbus.

I'll also add that there is credible evidence that many different groups had already been in the Americas before Columbus and traded with them - not wiped them out.

reply

Columbus was an immigrant who brought much needed diversity to the New World.

reply

Columbus was a settler-colonialist who brought syphilis to the "new world".

reply

Now you hate immigrants seeking a better life? Can't you keep comsistent?

reply

Columbus also brought "original sin" and the cure for such from pedophile Catholic priests... Given the choice, I'd probably pick syphilis...

Bartolomé de Las Casas, a Spanish Dominican priest, wrote directly to the King of Spain hoping for new laws to prevent the brutal exploitation of Native Americans by Columbus.

The first officially appointed "Protector of the Indians". His extensive writings, the most famous being A Short Account of the Destruction of the Indies and Historia de Las Indias, chronicle the first decades of colonization of the Caribbean islands. He described and railed against the atrocities committed by the conquistadores against the indigenous peoples.

During the reign of King Charles I, the reformers gained strength. A number of Spanish missionaries argued for stricter rules, including Bartolomé de las Casas and Francisco de Vitoria. Their goal was to protect the Indians against forced labor and expropriation, and to preserve their cultures. Some discussions challenged the very legitimacy of the conquest and colonization. Eventually, the reformists influenced the King and his court to pass reforms that came to be known as the "New Laws".

"the King of Spain"

My impression is that Isabella wore the pants in that marriage. She was not woke. She likely condoned Columbus' behavior.

while in Haiti, Columbus orders all Natives 14 years or older to collect a certain amount of gold every three months, an impossible task since there is so little gold there. If Arawak Natives do not collect enough, Columbus has their hands cut off and tortures them. Bartolome de las Casas, a young priest, witnessed many atrocities committed by Spaniards against Native peoples. He later wrote: “I saw here cruelty on a scale no living being has ever seen or expects to see.” Las Casas describes the treatment of Natives thus: “Our work was to exasperate, ravage, kill, mangle and destroy; small wonder, then, if they tried to kill one of us now and then…

Haha, nice....remember when they put up the razor wire around the WH because they knew how illegitimate they are??

reply

I'm not Jewish. It's just another day for me.

reply

Columbus turning out to be a Jew really explains everything...

reply

Not a divisive figure. The Indians fought wars before we came here. Also, the Mayans engaged in human sacrifice.

reply

Is that some kind of justification?

reply

The strong do what they can and the weak suffer what they must.

That is the only justification necessary here.

And the Aztecks!
