One reason we have a 2nd Amendment in the first place was to let the govt. know their place. There's a reason our govt. hasn't had a chance to turn totalitarian just yet; because they know that regular citizens (who outnumber the armed services as a whole) would turn on them with their guns if they outright tried to take over the US, constitution be damned. Our founding fathers were smart in that regard, particularly after the Redcoats took away regular citizens' guns and forced the colonists to house soldiers in their homes whether they wanted to or not.
