A thought provoking question.
A friend recently presented this to me:
Q. Why do women have rights?
A. Because men gave them rights.
True of false? Discuss.
A friend recently presented this to me:

A. Because men gave them rights.
True of false? Discuss.
Women fought to make men give them equal rights. "A" might be a technically true statement but it does not tell the whole story. "A" implies some sort of benevolence on men's part which is misleading.
shareHow did they fight? There was no battle. Yes, women wanted/demanded rights, but how did they actually get them? As far as I can see, their rights were granted to them by men who believed (as I do) that they should have them.
shareRights are not "Granted". Rights are god given, or inherent. That is fundemental to our culture and political system.
I agree, but there are countries where women don't have rights because men won't let them.
The question isn't intended as a discussion of whether women should have rights, rather how did they get them.
SHITTY CONVO NO MATTER THE DIRECTION IT GOES.
shareWhy is that? Intelligent, thought provoking conversations that can be controversial are bad? Why? People sharing ideas is bad? This topic is existential and could be uncomfortable for some, but what's wrong with discussing such things?
shareTHIS IS TROLLBAIT HORSESHIT....IT SUCKS...AS DO YOU FOR POSTING AND DEFENDING IT.
shareThen phrase the question that way.
If you agree that rights are god given, then ask the question as though that is your framework, NOT as though you believe that rights are granted by the state or the king.
I phrased the question exactly how it was presented to me and the fact remains that throughout history, God given rights have and continue to be "granted" by those in power or from liberators. Women under the Taliban "have" God given rights, but they are unable to obtain them.
shareIt's odd that you claim to share the traditional AMERICAN belief that Rights are God Given, yet in every post you restate the OPPOSITE, that the rights are granted by men.
Let's make it more concrete. PIck a specific right that you think was "granted" to women and when it was "granted" to them.
Passed by Congress June 4, 1919, and ratified on August 18, 1920, the 19th amendment granted women the right to vote.
shareVoting is a right. It is also a privilege and a responsibility.
A lot of women didn't WANT that change. They worried that it would lead to more responsibility outside the home being put on them and end up putting them in competition with men.
I agree and it could be argued that that has happened but my point is still that God given rights don't always come into play without someone "granting" them. Atheists for example, don't believe rights are God given, so the only ways for people to have rights, are for them to be granted or seized.
shareGOD GIVEN APPLIES WITH OR WITHOUT THE BELIEF IN GOD.
shareExplain. Also, explain why a lot of God given rights are not always appropriated.
I believe that news journalists in the middle east (as an example), have the God given right to not be decapitated, but some are anyway.
GOD GIVEN...MAN MANIPULATED.
shareTotally! That's the point. Is it true or false that women have God given rights in place because men allowed it? I already gave the example of women's right to vote. That is a right that had to be granted for women to be able to vote.
share because men allowed it
YOU HAVE A PENIS...YOUR ROCK...WE GET IT...IT DOES NOT MAKE YOU SUPERIOR IN ANY WAY TO WOMEN...YOUR CONTINUED QUEST FOR THE WEIRD VALIDATION THAT MEN ALLOWING WOMEN TO ENJOY THEIR GOD GIVEN RIGHTS IS SOMEHOW NOT A NEGATIVE FOR MEN AND NOT A DAMN THING MORE IS BIZARRE.
I don't care about any "validation". Why don't you address the question at hand instead of trying to be some crazy, white knight for some imagined cause? Do you or do you not agree that women have rights because men allowed? If not, tell me how women got rights and as as broader question, how has anyone who previously didn't have rights got them.
shareBORN EQUAL...BUT NOT TREATED AS EQUAL....WHAT A WONDERFUL GIFT...TREATING PEOPLE THE WAY THEY WERE MEANT TO BE TREATED ALL ALONG.
shareAgain, NOT THE POINT! People all over that world are not being treated like they were meant to be treated until someone allows it. Yes or no? Slaves were not freed until good people fought for them to be treated the way they were meant to be treated.
shareALLOWS...YOU ARE HELLBENT ON GETTING ME TO SAY MEN ALLOWED WOMEN TO BE EQUAL...WHICH I GUESS IS TECHNICALLY TRUE...IN THE SAME WAY I ALLOW A KIDNAP VICTIM TO ESCAPE TO THEIR FREEDOM.
shareYou finally understand the topic! How many people have you kidnapped and did you force them to smoke weed and watch movies with you and Ali?
shareI ALWAYS UNDERSTOOD YOUR "TOPIC"...I ALSO UNDERSTOOD HOW CHILDISH AND DIVISIVE IT WAS....I STOPPED KIDNAPPING PEOPLE LONG BEFORE ALI CAME ALONG.
shareAnd you've been the number one contributor.
Pro-tip: Avoid threads with "thought provoking" in the title.
I AM WATCHING SOUTH PARK AND MOVIECHATTING...ALI IS AT SCHOOL AND IT IS WINDY A FUCK OUTSIDE...I LOVED THE OPPURTUNITY TO DROP THIS MANY POSTS...USUALLY MIDDAY IS FAIRLY DEAD HERE....I HAVE A SHOGUN TO TAKE DOWN AND A THRONE TO SIT UPON AFTER ALL.
shareI don't understand your combativeness. We're on the same side. As an example of God given rights not being obtained, I believe unborn children have the God given right to not be aborted, but abortion is RAMPANT in America and the world.
shareYOU CANNOT GIVE SOMETHING THAT IS NOT YOURS TO GIVE...MEN JUST FINALLY STOPPED HOLDING WOMEN DOWN AND BACK.
shareThen why are there still places where women don't have rights?
shareASSHOLES REFUSING WHAT IS NOT THEIRS TO REFUSE.
shareI agree. See? We're having a civil conversation as was intended in this thread.
shareNO...WE AREN'T...YOUR POST IS WORDED AS IT IS TO CREATE DIVISION...YOUR POST IS INCORRECT AND CREATED TO INSPIRE DIVISION...THIS IS TROLLING 101...I HAVE TO REPLY WHETHER I WANT TO OR NOT...GOTTA KEEP THIS THREAD SOMEWHAT BALANCED.
shareYou're not keeping it balanced. People are contributing to the conversation civilly, and you don't even know what you're talking about. When your guard down as self proclaimed arbiter of what should and shouldn't be discussed on MC, you responded with your opinion, just as I intended.
shareThis country has gone down hill ever since women were given the right to vote.
shareAWW CHILONE WILL BE SO PLEASED...HE WAS HOPING FOR ANSWERS LIKE THIS.
shareJeez! I forgot to add mind reader to "Master of Posting Bullshit".
shareYOU KNEW VERY WELL WHERE THIS THREAD WAS HEADED WHEN YOU SPEWED IT OUT....AT LEAST BE A MAN ABOUT YOUR TROLLING HORSESHIT.🙂
shareBlah blah blah. You're the troll here.
I've been thinking about this subject since it was presented to me and I wanted to get other's thoughts. That's me being a man about it and it matters not if you believe me.
YOU WERE THINKING ABOUT HOW DIVISIVE AND BULLSHIT INSPIRING IT WAS...USING YOUR RELIGION AS A COVER FOR SHITPOSTING ABOUT WOMEN IS REALLY LOW...YOU SHOULD BE ASHAMED OF YOURSELF.
shareHere's a better question.
How much do gay relationships harm society?
😂
shareI don't know if there's an answer to that as we don't know where society would be if there weren't gay relationships.
shareSo you're saying gay relationships dont spread disease?
shareI'm not saying that at all, but to play devil's advocate, heterosexual relationships also spread disease.
shareMuch higher rate among gay men.
shareIn THAT ASPECT, society would be better off due to less disease, but there's no solution. Gays are a part of society and that will never change. People who think problems such as these can be solved, are the same people who support eugenics, ethnic cleansing, master races, genocide, etc.
shareMy point was to all the people who always claim "gay people dont harm anyone" or "being gay doesnt harm anyone"
shareThey also lie about how much domestic abuse happens between them behind closed doors, and it's a far higher frequency than in the mainstream community. I mean, you've got a lot of them wanting so bad to not be alone, but they often end up with a partner who suffered emotional/physical abuse while growing up, and they continue the cycle with the first gay partner, and the first one puts up with the abuse because they'd rather suffer than be alone. It's an odd situation, considering the internet made it easy for gay people to find each other and hook up, so it wouldn't be necessary for them to behave in such a desperate way anymore.
There's also a lot of instability in many of those relationships. Don't be fooled by the few stable, sometimes attractive couples you see online or in the media. They are a minority within their own community. Most gay people change relationships frequently (if possible), and many are promiscuous. In fact, a joke I heard from a straight guy who had lived in San Francisco for years was, "What does a lesbian bring on her second date? A moving van!" It's pretty common for the females to hook up quickly and break up just as fast. Adopted kids of gay couples often suffer collateral damage as a result of such home lives, with more abuse and instability in their lives than if they had been adopted by a straight couple.
SO DO STRAIGHT PEOPLE..
shareArent you a genius.
shareTECHNICALLY?..YES...BUT I DON'T DO SHIT WITH IT...THAT ISN'T HOW YOU MEANT THAT THOUGH...YOU MEANT IT SARCASTIC LIKE A THIRD GRADER...WHO ALSO FORGOT THE QUESTION MARK....WHY DO YOU INSIST ON BEING SO ANGRY AND OBTUSE?
shareSo acting on gay inclinations does cause harm to society which is a negative. You fucking moron.
shareNO...NO IT DOESN'T...YOU ARE THE ONLY ONE SAYING THAT...REPEATEDLY AS WELL...ALSO...THERE IS NO REASON FOR THE NAME CALLING...THIS IS A FRIENDLY PLACE FILLED WITH FRIENDLY PEOPLE.
shareSo spreading disease doesnt harm anyone? You get one honest chance to answer it. I'm not going in circles with you for an hour. The fact is gay sex harms society.
DISEASE IS SPREAD IN THOUSANDS OF WAYS...GAY SEX INCLUDED...AS WELL AS STRAIGHT SEX...GAY SEX IS NO MORE HARMFUL TO SOCIETY THAN SEX IN GENERAL...YOU ARE SINGLING GAY PEOPLE OUT BASED ON YOUR OWN BIGOTRY AND NOTHING MORE...MAYBE STOP DOING THAT...OR AT LEAST KEEP IT TO YOURSELF....MOVIECHAT IS AWESOME...YOU WILL HAVE A LOT MORE FUN WITHOUT THE UNWARRANTED HATRED.
shareConcession noted and accepted.
shareI LIKED YOUR OLD NAME BETTER...SAME TERRIBLE PERSONALITY THOUGH...COME ON,MAN...IT DOESN'T ALL HAVE TO BE POLITICS AND GAY HATE AND FIGHTING....MOVIECHAT IS A PLACE FOR FUN....MOVIES ARE AWESOME...RIGHT?....WHAT MOVIES DO YOU LIKE?
shareThere's nothing hateful about what I said. Take a deep breath.
shareNOBODY SAID THERE WAS...BUT IT IS CLEAR YOU HAVE A PROBLEM WITH OR ARE OBSESSED WITH GAY PEOPLE BASED ON YOUR OBSESSIVE POSTING ABOUT THEM.....HATRED OR JEALOUSY IS PROBABLY THE CORRECT ANSWER...I DID NOT SUGGEST EITHER THOUGH.
share"YOU WILL HAVE A LOT MORE FUN WITHOUT THE UNWARRANTED HATRED"
shareThat's not the question you should be asking. You should be asking, "How much harm does letting the gay community have power over others cause to society?" Because they rule Hollyweird, academia, and parts of our govt. now, and so far, I haven't seen anything positive come from it.
shareWomen have more rights than men. Men gave them those extra rights.
The rest are granted to all Americans by God.

technically its true...
shareWomen have rights now because they fought for them in the past, and there were some men who agreed that it wasn't fair the way women were treated under the law at the turn of the 20th century, and fought alongside them. The men in power partially let them win because they were showing off how "progressive" they were (virtue signaling isn't a new thing at all, it just changed names over the centuries), and partially because they knew they would eventually lose the battle over time, as more and more of their numbers were starting to see in the same way as the male feminists who supported the suffragettes.
It was a hard fight too. Many men back then believed women should be seen as property once married, shouldn't have a job once married, only have sex to have kids, never use protection, and shouldn't work in areas that were considered "a man's world." But as each new generation came along, attitudes changed, as well as women showing they could make it in jobs they originally had been barred from.
