Because they're swayed by propaganda, fake culture wars and personas in politics. Studies have shown that those that voted for Trump really did believe in his fake 'Apprentice' personality and that he was/is a great businessman.
And it's not a question of "if"... They do support them, we have the polling numbers. Even the vast majority of NRA members support universal background checks.
Voters in Missouri voted for expanding Medicare, Republicans ignored them.
Voters in Louisiana voted for marijuana decriminalization, Republicans went to the courts to stop it (and in Missouri as well I think, can't remember).
And just yesterday, voters in Kansas overwhelmingly voted not to touch the right to choose. Despite the ambiguously worded question, despite it being Kansas... Even deep red counties voted to keep the right for the woman to choose.
So, yeah, when policies are actually on the ballot, Republicans lose.
