You have to remember that the battle of Normandy was chaotic and full of disorganised mixed units that were struggling to communicate in the aftermath of D-Day. This went on for months. It wouldn't have been unusual for an understength unit to be tasked with holding a bridge simply because so many paratroopers and forces coming from the beaches were in a state of disarray despite D-Day being a successful invasion. Just watch Band Of Brothers for an idea of how the fighting was chaotic, sporadic and disorganised in the weeks following the landings. Yes... But he'd immediately be refreshed by the sleep he had pre 6am on the night before GD Wow, you seem to know so little about grief and how people act in those circumstances. It's not all bawling and tears. People react to devastating news in different ways. Especially taking into account the situation they're in. Ryan would likely have wondered if he'd ever see his brothers again before the news Miller delivered. Although devastating, it might not have been wholly unexpected. I thought Damon acted brilliantly when his character was told. Agree! Fury is way inferior According to Wiki: 'Allied medics serving the European and Mediterranean areas usually carried the M1911A1 pistol while those serving the Pacific theater carried pistols or M1 carbines. When and if they use their arms offensively, they then sacrifice their protection under the Geneva Conventions.' Perhaps Wade did have a weapon on the hill but either way, he was damn unlucky. The scene shows the injustice of warfare. I noticed that about Horvarh's wedding ring. Did you notice he takes it off when listening to the music before the tank battle? Perhaps keeping it safe knowing what's coming? Great little moment. I don't think this would have made much difference. They Carried so much gear anyway. If you've ever read 'The Things They Carried' by Tim O'Brien about the US troops in Vietnam, soldiers carried loads of extra quirky and bizarre personal items. Hint? Practically spelt it out. And that's fine. Agree with the original post, here. Watched this last night for the first time in around 13 years and so much of Jack Travern lacks any back story or anything. Why did he even become a cop? Look at Lethal Weapon and Die Hard. The sequels had to have McClean and Riggs in them. Speed 2 abandoned Travern and although it sucked, it didn't matter. Annie had more depth. Riggs was a widower who was suicidal. McClean was a family man whose marriage was on the rocks. Speed offer nothing. I did used to wonder why Burns got second credit and a spot on the cover, especially when Adam Goldberg had way more charisma and probably more lines. Tom Sizemore was pretty well known and his character important to Hanks. I thought he was wonderful in this. It's a Netflix movie so free for subscribers to Netflix. So get Netflix, I guess. Did I mention it's available on Netflix? That's Netflix if you missed it. 😉 Way off the mark IMO. SPR is nothing like FMJ aside from the fact it's a war movie. The D-day landings add depth to Miller's leadership skills and how his squad face the enemy under pressure. (we're introduced to Jackson and how his skill with a rifle bails the squad out later in Normandy, for instance). Vietnam and WW2 were hugely different conflicts and there is a sense of unity and leadership in SPR. I could go on, but basically, so much of your comparison is simply incorrect. Been a little while since I saw Aliens but each time I've rewatched it's held up well. Certainly more combat-esque but that was the point - basically a metaphor for the Vietnam War. The first movie plays like a horror... But the tension holds up on repeated viewings. Especially THAT dinner scene. I personally don't think it ruined it at all. Showed how cold Thomas Jane had become but also showed us that the criminal was a scumbag child molester who deserved it. I think it would be naive to think this kind of thing doesn't happen. Great movie. Could have been the smelly pants. I think more likely a broken neck. Nasty forward roll after dispersing the last pipe bomb. 💥
