I think it was because it was the first Star Wars movie in decades and people were literally lined up around the theatres. After it started getting worse reviews some people still just wanted to see it anyways because it's Star Wars.
This ^ especially people that never read the book. He most likely would have sounded slightly different. The movie has to spell out to the audience it's the same character with the voice being the same.

Yes and the fact that it is based on a true story makes it even more disturbing. Look up Ivan Milat to know the true story...
I don't think they could have returned it had to be Halloween to work for the movie.
It's funny because the scene where the smart a$$ kid says to Grant they are not scary they are more like turkeys which is actually more accurate to Grant's description of them.
I completely agree with you. The sequels just lack that mystique and magic of the original. The special effects still look better too.
R.I.P. That man's voice was a huge part of my childhood growing up when the internet was just beginning to bloom for everyone.
