Carolco Pictures was in dire straits financially and invested everything on the success of Cutthroat Island (1995) They went belly up in the wake of its release. It was Mario Kassar that got Renny blacklisted, not Andrew G. Vajna. I mixed them up. It’s a long time ago. Renny was blamed. Happens all the time when a film is not successful. The director is blamed even if it’s the studio that cut the film together.
No studio will make films like Cliffhanger, Die Hard 2 and Long Kiss Goodnight ever again. You will have the Marvel & FF series and you will have those low budget mass productions. Very few of those $ 35 – 55 million productions we saw in the 1990s.
For The Hollywood elite it’s a numbers game. Content is suffering. The art form that was American Movies is a thing of the past like shopping malls and Kodak.
Did you know, if you live in LA or NYC, that you cant make a living on being an actor alone ? You need a second job to support yourself. That’s how bad the film industry is right now pre covid19. Only one that makes money are the producers and the streaming services ( for now )
Today this film would have been shot for $ 12 – 18 million, with even same level of high profile actors. Shot in 21-30 days.
This film was granted a $ 55 million budget ( not including the reshoot add ons) In the 1990 the studios made so much money it was a heyday. Everyone was paid well back in the days.
The going rate for a production was $ 500.000 per day. This film took 112 days to shoot including re-shoots. Jack Nicholson was paid $ 13 million.
Michelle Pfeiffer was paid less than $ 6 million.
Renny Harlin was a very successful director by the time he had turned 30. I like Die Hard 2 more than I like DH1/DH3/DH4. He was very talented and his directing style was fresh & crisp.
Not many directors his age have managed this level of success.
It was not until his run-ins with Carolco Pictures and the vindictive Andrew G. Vajna that his career had its first huge blow.
Andrew G. Vajna basically managed to get Renny Harlin canceled. Blaming him for sinking Vajna life work, Carolco Pictures.
This devastated Renny Harlin career. He did not work for 4-5 years after this.
When he returned he had changes his directing style trying to copy Michael Bays visual style. Driven was another failure. So have basically every project he has been in involved with since. He now have to travel to Asia in order to get work.

Drew Caffrey was a real estate mogul but also a gay man. His prime interests later in life was young boys 18+. After the divorce from his wife and 3 x children in 1979 he moved from LA to SF to be closer to the gay scene there.
How he met Tommy Wiseau is anyone guess but they did partner up in one way or another there. Drew Caffrey had agreed to finance his film and ended up doing so posthumously.

Drew Caffrey was a know figure in LA at the time also. This was early 1990s. He was very active in 1996/97. Helping out young struggling actors with money in trade for sex. Young tan blond kids in their late teens or early 20s.
This is JUST me, its NOT confirmed but I suspect he died from AIDS in 1999. I vaguely remember hearing about this at one point.
He most likely are torn with guilt. Well deserved. Being him, in his shoes, must be hell.
I met Charlie Sheen a few times in 1998. He was dating -or having sex with a friend of mine. That lasted as far as I remember only a few weeks.
All of us looked up to Charlie at that time. Looking back at his Filmography now I see that the late 1990s was not his best years in regards to work. But he had made it, a Bona fide movie star. He had fame, something we all wanted. It was my impression that he did not have a lot of money and he was always comped bottle service in bars and restaurants, free food etc. One time I remember he skipped out on a bill leaving a friend of mine in deep trouble. Charlie Sheen was however always flush with drugs. Coke, heroin and things I don’t even know the name of. He would drink too and could party for 3-4 days straight.
I remember him as being inclusive and the life of the party. He was also very smart and articulate. Many liked him, he had friends everywhere and remembered their names.
If one where to analyze him at that time it would reveal Charlie Sheen as a full blow sociopath. A person that was skilled enough to make people do what he wanted in order to benefit him. Without any regards for the consequences. Hollywood is a cynical place where the weak are eaten or raped of all dignity. Charlie Sheen was a master of maneuvering the rocky shores if West Hollywood.
I met him years later at the Scary Movie 3 premiere. He had cleaned up a bit and had no idea who I was.

I have friends in the film industry. I don’t know Dwayne Johnson, never met the man.
However there is a huge battle going on in Hollywood where anyone that supports Trump is cancelled or even blacklisted. You will be fired from ongoing or new projects if your employer suspects that you support him. If you don’t post anti Trump propaganda on your social media you are under suspicion. What Dwayne Johnson is doing is being PC.
He can’t be racist, he’s a Jew!
Management by fear is a well know management strategy that results in high turnover. However it burns the employees out and creates a toxic work place. Sadly MBF yields acceptable short-term results and will continue to be used until the management see the variable costs related to it long term.
Try to avoid choosing a workplace like this.
