I'm assuming you didn't watch the film? If anything he uses it as a chance to poke fun at himself and how he would handle certain situations, even if he is playing a fictional version of himself.
Isn't one of the morals just 'don't be greedy'? If Jeremy Strong's character had just accepted the deal for the fair price it already was, then everything would've been... Kushty.
Ok, I can see the symbol of freedom thing. I still think the end is a bit of a jarring moment to put it in, but it clearly works for some people!
As for the second point however, would John really feel it was going to be just as fruitless when they'd already killed the dictator figure during the train takeover, and John and Juan were planning on going to America?
I think there are a few moments in the film where you have to suspend your disbelief, but that by no means makes the film bad or the events completely impossible.
My take on ending was that the original plan was to drive the terrorist van to the FBI building and get in undetected, which is reinforced by the fact Oliver Lang discouraged Michael Faraday from pursuing any further as he then couldn't 'guarantee the safety' of Faraday's son. So the way I see it is Lang was actively discouraging Faraday from interfering, but as soon as the truck realised it was being followed by him, they had a change of plan involving Lang intercepting Faraday and giving the people in the truck time to plant the bomb in Faraday's rental car.
If the original idea was to enter the FBI building using the van, they must've planned it around the time a van was actually scheduled to arrive, except they would bring in the terrorist van instead. After the change of plan however, they let the scheduled van get there so that Faraday would follow it in.
Again you have to suspend your disbelief for this a little bit, but it makes more sense than letting the plan hinge entirely on Faraday finding a van suspicious and following it. It would raise questions about why not have two bombs - one in the van and one in Faraday's car - to double-down on their chances of succeeding. Anyway, this is my take on it.
That's a surprising and interesting version to hear about. Please could you confirm what version that is? Preferably providing the year, region, format (DVD, Blu Ray, etc.), distribution company (MGM, Warner, Mondo, etc.), or whichever of those you can find out.
I kind of get that it's nice to have flashbacks which are open to some interpretation, and according to the IMDb FAQ, it's the version Leone himself preferred. The IRA/traitor sub-plot serves the story for Mallory's motivation to save Juan from the firing squad, as well as explaining why he doesn't jump to conclusions about Dr. Villega and tell the rest of the resistance the truth about him. However by the end of the film, I don't see how Nolan taking his girl or being an informer are relevant to the story, especially when it breaks up the climactic death of John Mallory.
I think the fantasy interpretation of the flashback makes most sense, especially if you consider he's acknowledged he's not going to make it out alive. You probably wouldn't be thinking about old grudges against your former friend at that point, but as you said, it's open to interpretation!

Framerate differences between the US and UK. The US DVD framerate is 23.976 fps and the UK DVD framerate is 25fps, that means the US version has fewer frames per second, and therefore ends up longer.
After having previously bought a couple of newer/censored versions by mistake, I can confirm the 2004 UK (PAL Region 2) DVD release of Lawn Dogs (by Cinema Club) is definitely an uncensored version.

It looks like the original 1998 US release and the 2014 Japanese release are 101 minutes long, whereas the rest of the regions are 97 minutes.
HOWEVER, as the US DVD framerate is 23.976 fps and the UK DVD framerate is 25fps, that means the US version has fewer frames per second, and therefore ends up longer.
97 minutes = UK version.
97x60 = 5,820 = Number of seconds in the UK version.
5820x25 = 145,500 = Number of frames in the film.
145500/23.976 = 6,069 = Number of seconds in US version
6069/60 = 101 minutes = US version
