haha i honestly didn't think anyone would read this so soon. My thought was someone in the future might watch a film of his and head here so i wanted to have something explaining the bare minimum lol.
Are you American per chance?
If so his films are very very English you might even need subtitles at points no joke with the regional accents and the unscripted style but if you get into him he's a goldmine
The obvious two 2 start for newbie is Kill List and Sightseers if you don't like them he isn't for you but if you do there's plenty more where that came from
'For a man to be betrayed by another man when the two held a previously honorable agreement is a moral crime, punishable by death'
I like this and i like reading dead posts from a long way back from older people who got the vibe of this film better than i or someone young and living in this era would be able articulate.
See i wouldn't at all get that he's a man from an older era plonked into a modern time.
It's funny i saw this film a few years ago and i didn't like it never clicked with me but i do like Altman and this film gets brought up a lot so i give it second go and glad i did i loved it this time round. I love PTA Inherent Vice one of my favs and i know he borrows a lot from Altman this one as well the similarities between Marlow and Joaquin Phoenix are there for sure
I literally couldn't remember any of this film from first watch but halfway through i suspected the wife was up to something but i didn't trust if that was intuition or i was getting recall from last time lol
I forgot ending but i started to piece it together this time round there were plenty of clues the wife's slip of tounge 'i i liked how you helped my friend' to the Mexican Police ' i do everything, i coroner, Doctor, i have list' ect i knew he wasn't dead and the ending hit hard like Inherent Vice you really have to roll with the character or the film make no sense
He wasn't passive purse but he had a philosophy and a code and he stuck to it and it really served him well despite the trouble he landed in his aggresssors were often blunted because he just wouldt react how they wanted to but he wasn't a mug and what Lennox did hurt him and him shooting him was saying
'fuck you i was a good, loyal friend who asked for nothing and you treat me like a cunt'
Fucking Liberal 70's he was so old fashioned even the gorgeous chicks across the place knew he was harmless lol
Great Character Great Film
Definitely has a lot of Boogie nights parallels
I said it straight away after the long opening segment and after that i caught a fair few scenes that were like Boogie Nights
The Coke scene at begining- Amber and Rollergirl
Manny's long stare at Robbie thinking WTF am i doing here
Robbie's first scene crying on Cue and asking if they want to go again/Dirk cumming on Cue and asking if they want to go again.
The money scene with Tobey Maguire is basically the scene when they try to sell fake coke
Brad Pitts suicide scene is just like Little Bills
The Rolling decades times changing
There's a few more i think those are just top of my head
Yeah because when it's reversed why is Sue so surprised and shocked at how the old one has been living all week. With all the food everywhere and the TV on and everything
Actually an interesting point about Steve McQueen. Not having grown up with him but only knowing the legend i have tried a few times to watch a film of his and i wasn't really feeling it either.
The idea of him seems better than the reality. The only one i rate was papilion and funny enough he wasn't the cool guy in that one.
Agree Bruce Dern made this film. His constant bullying of his team mate was funny 'you're a loser, but i think you want to be a winner' he reminds me very much of Earl Strikland the 9 ball pool player both in looks and character which is hilarious if you are familiar with Earl
Ex Stripper also aka ex rent boy
It's an even worse form of exposition and just like in real life if somebody is constantly explaining how tough they are or how funny loyal ect it has the opposite effect
I'm thinking back to Ledgers character now and all the monologues about his upbringing and everything it's just cringe to me not menacing in the slightest i never liked the Nolan films but wasn't sure exactly why and now i think it's these little things plus the shit score that put me off
Great point about how they would get the point across with one succinct line.
It's an annoyance most films are guilty of now i noticed it really bad with one of the last Scream films. They spend 20 minutes telling us how sad and vulnerable the main girls are where in the original you get one or two lines about what happened the year before to Sydney's mother and we understand perfectly and can move along with the story
Not really surprising anymore it's just standard now but all that aside the film was just outright shit.
They had a decent premise but the tone was really annoying with the quippy sit com style dialog and it just turned into a Kill Bill style bad ass bitches triumphing and looking super cool. The film could have been really dark and memorable but it's just usual hack
I like the cut of your jib, a man after my own mind
Is Channing Tatum one of them?
It is odd (deliberately so) i think.
She's also there when he's driving to Chick World and she always seems to know everything.
I am still %51/49 if Shasta's real. I mean the first scene she is real but i am unsure if she's bumped off during the film and Doc's imagining the rest
So was the Shining
The film was an atrocity and he got caught in the crossfire trust me he's good in it
You're not a 'creative' person are you?
Might want to re-think those menthol cigarettes
Just re watched this for the first time in about 15 years. I think i came across it through old IMDB boards as it had a bit of a cult following.
This was really good film plot wise it's kind of similar to Blood Simple but i actually think this is better. One thing that kind of lets it down is the score it gives the film a made for TV quality which is a shame because it's way better than that.
She is brilliant the sequence where she leaves the scribbles in her bedroom for him to find to then dramatically having a fake meltdown followed by her laughing to her self at how easy this guy is is really well played.
Wasn't she kind of black listed for being 'difficult' she definitely was a star on the rise and then gone over night.
Oscars are a joke anyway the winner usually has more to do with the type of film and political context rather than quality of performance

Haha Touché
Sexual innuendo's are the highest form of wit
Although the film is panned i always thought he was hilarious in Striptease
The more they show the less shaggable they look
Absolute Crap but i wasn't that surprised because i don't think i have seen a good A24 yet. They are all the same with Anti Christian pro Satanism vibes in all of them.
A much better and creepier version of this kind of film was The Dead Center with that guy from Primer. It only has a 5.8 but that goes to show you can't trust ratings because there are too many plebs out there having too much influence
And i didn't actually know Nic Cage was in it until he started getting too much screen time and was given licence for his over acting. Less would have been more
