This makes sense, but I'm also very confused about how the wreckage ended up being in Vietnam in the end. It doesn't make sense that Chinese fighters would be able to pass over there, and that there was no military response from Vietnam to either those fighters or the British vessel. This was a huge oversight by the writers. I think it's a step up from the overrated GoldenEye. GE has a very weak third act, very bad miniatures and special effects, and most importantly the plot and character motivations make absolutely no sense. The single worst filmmaker alive today. A decline in the arts represents a broader decline in civilization. I am flabbergasted that his has been nominated for a Best Picture award. I tried to be open minded and watch this, but I couldn't get through more than 20 minutes. This nomination is a very troubling sign of things to come. 6/10 is way too high. This is a 0.5/10 at best. Easily the worst Bond film ever made. Even Skyfall (The Dark Knight ripoff) was better than this. It's one of the worst ever. Maybe it seemed like a cool idea in the storyboards though. This scene, and every other action scene in the whole film, are simply terrible. Those boats in the 'chase' are going no faster than maybe 25 km/h. Same thing with those flying snowmobiles later on. Every stunt in this movie is so slow. Maybe the director thought he was allowed to speed up the film in the editing room and then was ordered not to. I completely agree. I first saw the DC (or maybe it was the Euro theatrical version) with the Goldsmith score a few years ago and always remembered how much I liked it until I finally bought it on Bluray recently. I couldn't believe how bad the US version is. The dialogue was particularly cringey. I do like the Tangerine Dream score, and sometimes I'll listen to it on youtube, but that cut of the film is just awful and not worth watching just for the music. Chinese has multiple phonetic systems (and thus multiple input systems). I can type pinyin (Romanized Chinese), and so can most other westerners who have learned Chinese, but there are also other input systems that I would have no idea how to use. I think this is actually a plot hole because mainland Chinese people use pinyin too. It's people in Taiwan and perhaps some other places that use different phonetic and input systems like the one seen in TND. After multiple viewings, this is the one film in the series that holds up every time. I think it is the quintessential Bond film that follows the formula while also doing some new and interesting things. There is very little in the film that I would want to change. The stunts and action sequences are easily the best. The airplane fight is incredible, and much of that scene was filmed for real with no special effects. Only the closeup shots were done on a green screen, but the others were filmed with real stuntmen hanging off the plane. The director's commentary explains how it was shot. The opening scene in Gibraltar, Necros' attack on the country house, and the Hercules plane taking off are some of the other awesome action scenes. The suspenseful scenes were also very well done, particularly the post-title scene of the defection. Necros is the best henchman in the series by far. Every one of his scenes is so much fun to watch, and not only the action scenes. I happen to think that a poor henchman can ruin an otherwise decent film. Tomorrow Never Dies is one that stands out for me where the henchman was totally useless and forgettable, and the quality of the film was compromised because of it. Although I'm not a fan of Licence to Kill, I think that Dalton gave the single best performance as Bond in The Living Daylights. There are no scenes in this film that make me cringe or tempt me to fast forward to the next scene. The pacing is just perfect. The only change I would make is to have a less abrupt transition from Afghanistan to Whitaker's hideout. This film also has the best score in my opinion. And Bond pulling his gun on a child at the fair was just hilarious.
