Race was definitely a factor because:
if Will Smith was white, hitting a black comedian, he would've been cancelled and arrested before the end of that show. If he had gotten away with it, the Oscars would've been cancelled for letting a white actor get away with assault. Parallels would be drawn to slavery and Jim Crow law South.
If Chris Rock was white, getting hit by a black actor, Will Smith would've gotten away with it in the short term. He would be able to spend the rest of the night at the show, and then hold the winner's speech. However the post-show reaction would be much more severe and racial. Oscars would risk getting cancelled, not by the woke mob, but by the alt right. It would be a new OJ Simpson case. Black people would come out in bigger support of Will Smith, because he had angered white people.
"Tayo Bero" is just another talentless hack in the lucrative race baiting business.
This didn't ruin his reputation as much as when he pulled the race card for not getting nominated in 2016.
