According to reviews I read, she was suffering from something called prairie madness. Apparently, It afflicted a lot of Americans in the 19th century who moved from the cities to these desolate areas to settle. The lack of human contact, and the constant wind made them imagine all sorts of voices, and they even suffered from depression.
