Why did Stallworth have to continue pretending being a white man on the phone when Flip could have taken over completely

Why have a black cop pretending to be a white guy on the phone when they could have just as easily have a white guy handle the phone. Especially when you have the added advantage of not sounding like 2 different people on phone and face-to-face.

I'm not sure of the real life version of events but the movie looked like it was bending over backwards to have Stallworth as part of the plot. Logically, the police chief would have just taken Stallworth off the case and put Flip on it so as not to risk jeopardizing it.

Flip was a wise guy trying to keep trix and Murphy on the dl with the straight cheese

I just watched it last night and this is the one thing that's bugging me. It appears to have happened like this in real life though. I may try to check out the book, or at least read about the book. (Reading books takes time.)

My only explanation for this is that Stallworth didn't want to pass up a chance on cracking such a big case by handing it over to someone else.
