The opening scene is supposed to resemble Cuba. The leader with the Castro like beard. The gas stations had a Che Guerva like logo on the pump along with the vintage cars. The theme of the movie is the cold war. Cuba ties into the cold war along with the Russians

That scene was a metaphor taken from the history of the PineBarrens area in Jersey. The story goes that over the years many people have vanished in that area without a trace

Like all the other TV shows on the air, a network picks it up and much money is made off of commercials. If people showed will power, then a network like TNT, FOX, etc would have picked it up. Its not like they were not going to make the series.
