I liked it way more then you did, I didn't find the whole Pin and Tugger stuff interesting, wasn't awful just didn't think it flowed as well. But I love the noirish dialogue, the performance from Joseph Gordon-Levitt is fantastic and he's the main reason to watch this, loved the interaction between him and Matt O'Leary's The Brian. The downbeat undertone to the way the story flows and the way it's shot. Just love that our main character goes through all this for Emily, who clearly doesn't care a jot for him and their unborn baby. Brendan is a great noir anti-hero. Wasn't a big fan of Nora Zehtner as Laura, could have casted better for that role imo. But overall a very good low budget film 8/10
First time seen this gem of a film a few days ago, has left a mark with me. I'm really surprised at how great Andie MacDowell is, by far her greatest performance. I agree it's award worthy. The way she turns the tables on Spader and it shows that Spader is just like her and is damaged soul is fantastic and heartbreaking.
Spader is so fucking good in this, he's only in it sparingly but when he's on screen he makes his mark and it's one of the best performances from 80's cinema.
I never felt she really loved John and was only doing it to get back at her sister Ann, as she felt her sister always looked down on her and her old sister was always perfect. I think she ended it cause she also changed when she met Graham and just grew tired of John and her fun with him. She also cared for her sister in a way and even in the end you can see she loves her sister and wants a relationship with her, which might or might not happen but Ann gives her new number so offers a olive branch.
What she did to her sister was scummy and I can why some might not like Cynthia.
Seen pictures of her on her instagram and damn she's looking good to me. If that's aging poorly then let me age like that. She doesn't look that much different, she looks late 20's/early 30's to me.
Such a shame about her as for a year or two back in the early 00's, she was on for big things. I know motherhood became her main focus, and if you listen to the commentary for The Rules of Attraction, I don't think acting or been famous was that big of a deal to her. I love that hipster look with the short hair she had, and she did some good work like A Knights Tale, The Rules of Attraction, Wristcutters and Kiss Kiss Bang Bang (totally didn't know that was her in a short role). She's still working today but it's a case of someone who didn't strike while the iron was hot and end up doing a lot of B-Movies and TV work.
You mean Sean, I think he probably did and Lauren for a time did before he slept with her roommate Lara, then the fake suicide joke basically ruined any chances of Lauren falling for him. Sean seems like sociopath to me and no way if a relationship started with Lauren would it have lasted, he probably would have got bored with her.
I think her and Victor met, and probably had a night of fumbling about. He probably fed her lines to get something out of her and Lauren took it too heart and probably believed all the crap Victor was feeding her. Victor seems to like sleep around and probably quickly forgets the women he sleeps with it, look at his trip to Europe he probably fumbled about or slept with a dozen women. Throw in the girls he slept with in college and Victor just simply forget about Lauren, although he mentioned her during the whole Europe trip as another girl reminded him of her. I'm sure he probably liked her for a short time, seen as she didn't have sex with him but he quickly forgets her.
I don't know if you could get studio's to green lit Bret Easton Ellis work today maybe on a low budget and a smart director/script and a good up and coming cast could do it. Maybe a TV series by HBO or Netflix. Less Then Zero deserves a better adaption, shame as the 80's version had a great cast with the awesome James Spader and Robert Downey Jr. Maybe someone will do it someday but it definitely won't be with a big studio.
He's entitled to his opinion, maybe The Rules of Attraction adaption is closer to the book then the other adaptions, can't say as I haven't read it. As a film, not a book adaption, American Psycho is the better film as it has a way better performance and flows better for me. But The Rules of Attraction is far better then it's 6.7 on IMDB has you believe. It's a film that a studio wouldn't make today.
Black Book flows a lot better cause it's only set on one character Rachel (Carice Van Houten) and it's pretty OTT in places, and as someone else said they had the budget and Technical advantage for stuff that Soldier of Orange didn't have.
I think Soldier of Orange is probably more factual on the resistance side of things. It doesn't help outside of Rutger Haeur's Eric and to a certain extent Jeroen Krabbe Guus that the other friend's barely get any Character building. Also the women unlike Rachel are just there to be sex objects especially in the case of Belinda Meildijk's Esther who like Rachel is Jewish, they could have gone in deeper with her character. All she is there for is to pine for Erik, get her kit off (which is nice) and at the end she doesn't seem bothered with him. Even at 2hrs 30mins it drags in places, but with a great charismatic performance from Haeur and some tense scenes it's a very good solid WW II film.
I agree with their IMDB ratings on this one.
She loved Erik, seen as she ended up with him at the films end, she even helped Erik get into the RAF even with his bad eye problems. Even after sleeping with Guus, she was never in love with him and happily let him go to keep Eric safe.
I can't choose one far too many good ones. So here's my list.
Days of Glory (2006)
The Pianist (2002)
Black Book (2006)
Letters from Iwo jima (2006)
Saving Private Ryan (1998)
Thin Red Line (1998)
The Bridge on The River Kwai (1958)
Army of Shadows (1968)
Son of Saul (2015)
The Dirty Dozen (1967)
Cross of Iron (1977)
Schindlers List (1993)
Grave of The Firefiles (1988)
Dunkirk (2017)
Das Boot (1981)
Come and See (1985)
Europa Europa (1990)
During the 70's and early 80's he was one of the best for sure. He got more hit and miss from the late 80's onward but when he was on, he was fantastic. Mind you won the Oscar for the wrong role. Should of won for The Godfather II or Dog Day Afternoon imo.
We all know his classic roles from 70's and early 80's, but to pick his best work from the late 80's onwards I say, Dick Tracy, Glengarry Glen Ross, Heat, Donnie Brasco, The Insider, Any Given Sunday,Insomnia, Angels In America and Danny Collins.
"Looks awful" is a bit harsh. She definitely doesn't look like she did early in her career, people forget that she was pretty good looking woman in her young years (her daughter looks a lot like her during her early run). Health problems, been a mother of a few kids and maybe just not giving damn for what she looks like is probably has a lot to do with it.
Shame illness mental and physical and some bad rep on set with other talent has probably stopped her career in it's tracks as a lead in Hollywood films. For a while in the late 90's and early 00's, she was legit one of the best actresses around. She's recently got a part on Walking Dead, maybe a bit past it's peak but it could put her back on the map. She's only 42 and is still young to make a comeback to the heights of her early career.
But that early run was something else, That TV series Band of Gold she was excellent in, Under The Skin, Sweet And Lowdown (got a Oscar nod), Jesus Son, Morvern Callar, Minority Report, In America, Code 46, Enduring Love and The Libertine. That run from 96 to 2004 had a few clunkers but it's definitely held her best work as a actress. But after that she had some good work still in there, Longford, Control, Synecdoche New York, Cosmoplis and The Messenger. She's more into the TV worker in the last few years.
She's not had a bad career at all, but probably only did in patches and not on a constant basis probably down to Illness and her rumored bad rep on set. But she's a talent for sure.
Breaking Bad
Band of Brothers
Our Friends in the North
It seemed like a relationship out of co-dependence then love by the end, it seemed to me.
Morvern throughout the film seemed like a lonely person to me. Her friendship with Lanna seemed more out of not wanting to be alone then both been true friends imo. The way she went around to Lanna's grandmother's house by herself just to spend time with her seemed like the actions of a lonely young woman just wanting company. Also when she's on holiday she never seems to mix with anyone besides the guy she has a one night stand with. Even Lanna seemed to be one of Morvern's boyfriend's one night stands and it wouldn't surprise me if she was only around to be the boyfriend then with Morvern. With her boyfriend, I just can't see love been there when she leaves the body there to rot, cuts it into little pieces and throws it away like rubbish. Plus not telling his family and stealing his work and money, left me cold.
From the little hints we get, their relationship seemed to be pretty tense, with the boyfriend leaving quite a few times and probably sleeping around behind Morvern's back. I'm sure they loved once another once but it seemed like Morvern had fallen out of love with him.
Fargo and Secret and Lies were better films that Year imo. Juliette Binoche and Williem Dafoe were probably the stand out performances. I think it's the late Anthony Minghella worse film imo. But when you had Weinstein's pushing for the film especially back then it was always going to win sadly. It's not an awful film just a fine one saved by wonderful performances.
I go from 1980 Best Picture onwards that I think are worse then The English Patient. Out of Africa, Driving Miss Daisy, Shakespeare in Love, A Beautiful Mind, Chicago, Crash, The Kings Speech and Green Book.I think are worse winners then The English Patient imo.
I still think Gone Baby Gone is Afflecks best film to date, but I did love The Town a lot, especially the late great Pete Postlethwaite was a proper nasty bastard in this. Along with Wind River and The Hurt Locker, this is Jeremy Renner's best work. Affleck himself is a solid lead. Also big praise to Blake Lively shows more to her then the girl from Gossip Girl, which she did more darker works like this.
Great film
I don't agree, she's no Robert Pattinson for me but she's a solid talent. I prefer a lot of her pre Twilight work, also helps she was a lot cuter back then too. But a lot worse out there then her.
