Just my take but I didn't see her being gay as a big part of the plot. It was more about human suffering as a whole, how we treat each other and how we respond to a seemingly indifferent universe. The gay thing was just one of the ways they showed character growth on the part of the mother.

So The Guest is essentially a stylistic homage to 80s horror. The parents were intentionally out of touch, it's a common trope in 80's horror stuff. The kids are more aware of whats going on and the parents are sort of jaded and uptight. Has nothing to do with the movie wanting to be "overly correct".
