'21 in a month...'

I understand nowadays movies rare very cautious of condoning underage drinking etc, but I found it a bit ridiculous and uptight that a young woman who was turning 21 in a month wasn't allowed to have a beer in the safety of her own home. Because oh yeah, letting her drink in the safety of her home when she is turning 21 so soon is completely outrageous, right? Most people have had alcohol before 21.
I know this is super nitpicky, and not a big deal lol. But it just REALLY got under my skin the way it was said.
If I was her, I would've said, "That's fine, I'll go do it on my own anyway!" Just because.

Ridiculous how uptight and overly correct movies need to be these days. Jesus.

It's not uncommon for parents to enact harsher restrictions than they themselves saw during their youth.

I took it that it was character development for the uptight father. Plus, it showed why Anna was so rebellious.

As to the larger issue of US taboos, remember, this country was founded by Puritans. They are still around in spirit.

So The Guest is essentially a stylistic homage to 80s horror. The parents were intentionally out of touch, it's a common trope in 80's horror stuff. The kids are more aware of whats going on and the parents are sort of jaded and uptight.

Has nothing to do with the movie wanting to be "overly correct".
