the man who shot liberty valance
that girl is the only german person shown in the movie. I guess the scene is about the humanity of the ranks, and that of the victims. It tells us that those germans who are shooting at the french are people with frailties as well. Regardless what the generals plan and plot, it all comes down to simple people made of flesh and who can cry and this is when all those characters realize that.
that's a moment when he found a woman that valued sportsmanship, differently than his wife.
as others have mentioned, that scenes is meant to hint at his marriage problems, but also the nature of those problems. in his failing relationship, his physical prowesses didn't have a place
i really think there ought to be an intermediate version. the longer version kind of drags too much
"I always remember what Roger Ebert said about the long version, that the movie basically works as its own sequel."
hahahah that's exactly the case! wow
too bad you didn't have a priest to cut off all the indecent scenes from the movie beforehand
from what i understand, she had just won an oscar the year before
the thing is that Lisa fits perfectly to the object-type person he want's to engage with. By being vulnerable, he finds himself in an advantageous position with her, even though that might not be clear for him.
Also, she is constantly repressing her desires and preferences. I think that appeals even more to Michael. By the way, i think the reason he wouldn't choose Em over Lisa is because was interested in him. He doesn't want somebody who has interests. (It's true that Em's voice was like everybody else's from the beginning, but i think the film is arguing that we can sense this kind of thing from the beginning. We can sense who might fit our expectancies from the first moment)
it's when Lisa starts to show herself as a person that Michal gets troubled.
i saw it differently. i think he preffered lisa exactly because Em was into him. She showed her ability to desire, and THAT is what frightens him across the movie. It's when Lisa starts to show herself as a person, and not as an object he can play with anymore, that she starts sound as a man and he starts to suffer.
"How convenient that she neatly philosophises the whole episode into something palatable for us."
i saw that as a narrative of hers that's palatable for her, above all. Isn't that all that's left for us after a hugely tragic episode?
the version where he shouts johnny is rather awkward because the pronounciation stresses that 'ee' vowel a lot while rod steiger in that scene opens his mouth widely
what censored dialogue you refer to?
what i do know about the versions is i hate each and every version that shows the final flashback with a song that i don't is the one that was intended. i think the proper song is the one that, as nolan kisses the girl, turns to a much darker tone. the song follows the scene as it converges to a darker path and reveals this important thing about john's past.
as opposed to another song (very beautiful of course, as this whole soundtrack is) that follows through this scene without any concern to what is taking place on the screen. i absolutely hate it.

maybe this can help
it took me years to consider the possibility that lil forrest isn't actually forrest's son.
i wouldn't go for timeline based arguments, as i don't think they are even necessary. i think the movie actually wants us to leave that possibility open, and i have several reasons for that.
forrest is a family man, he's trying the whole film to make a family with jenny, but she's not at all into it. It is when she's left with a child and gets sick that she looks for forrest.
by far his worse, even worse than the hateful eight
1 Pulp fiction
2 inglorious basterds (these two are top tier shit)
3 Django
4 Kill Bill 1&2
5 Hateful Eight (hated it)
6 OUATIH
i just left the movie theatre at that same point and i don't even wanna know what the ending is
that was just an excuse. it was blocked for being such a lousy movie
he's wise enough to let one of the kingdoms break out of his rule the second after he's named king. he doesn't even think of the consequences of it. what the fuck?
this post was deleted because they posted it to the dark side of the moon and it could not be more... isolated
i think that at that point, Daniel can't think straight anymore. He's become erratic to an extreme extent, and that is visible in his previous dialogue with H.W., in which he shows affection at one moment, and disgust on the next.
He's absolutely unstable, not only phisically (the way he wobbles as he walks, etc)
