As "overrated" is a bit of a broad & subjective term I wish people would give their reasons for labelling specific directors as that. A name or list of names is a bit meaningless! It just seems to always be a "list of directors who's films I don't like".

I was about 8 when Jaws came out, about 10 when Star Wars & Close Encounters came out...that pretty much sealed my fate :)

The Elephant Man without a doubt, and it does it without ever slipping into mawkishness. The first time Hopkins' character meets Merrick, that's how you do emotional cinema.
