That’s true, and that’s why I find the film fascinating. It isn’t necessarily a war film, but the Vietnam war experience, and its effect on the characters, is like glue that holds the narrative together.
This movie always comes to mind when I think of Vietnam war flicks, because it is depicted in such a viscerally brutal way, even though the actual war is only a brief chapter in the whole story.
I guess so... I can accept it being an ironic title, but I wonder if the filmmakers or cast have ever commented on the meaning of the title.
I’m gonna YouTube it and see what I find.
I have! But all I find are film reviews, nothing that directly addresses the meaning of the title.
Anybody?
I don’t know the names, but I’m pretty sure the final scenes show us which characters survived. The ones we see lived, the ones we don’t probably died. They show a lot of the deaths during the final battle as well.
Everything escalates so quickly—absolutely terrifying situation to imagine oneself in.
Yeah the music works perfectly—damn near perfect, at least—in both films
I agree, but would you consider SPR a ‘horror’ flick? I guess in a way it is...
Lol totally agree
Any thoughts?...
Definitely somewhat of a dark comedy, but also extremely depressing and disturbing at times. A harrowing film, in my humble opinion.
Dr. Strangelove was much more upbeat in comparison.
Cheers to you as well, and welcome to the club!
Kubrick is one of the greats.
These ones are pretty good:
Sin City (the first one)
The Dark Knight
Logan
30 Days Of Night
Watchmen (Ultimate Cut)
I really like Man of Steel as well, and the Bryan Singer X-Men flicks.
Lol
Thanks!
Thanks for your response! Very enlightening. I see Lovecraft’s name mentioned often on horror movie boards and sci-fi boards, seems that he is an inspiration to many artists, and has many fans.
Also I really dig “The Mouth of Madness” (so trippy) and didn’t realize it had Lovecraft influence.
Where should I start when it comes to reading Lovecraft’s stories?
Zephyr_cape, in your opinion, what would be a movie with true Lovecraft themes/tone?
How does this movie relate to Lovecraft? I’m familiar with the name (Lovecraft) but not the work, and genuinely curious.
Ok, that's cool.
I never really knew that SPR and EWS were being made at basically the same time.
I wonder why Kubrick took so long to make EWS...?
It's amazing that Spielberg was able to complete SPR before EWS when comparing the technical difficulties of making each film (SPR being far more complicated).
I love both of these films, and both directors, and you shared a good post, and I thank you for it. I'm sorry for being an asshole with my initial response, I was having a bad day--expecting something when I should have been accepting something.
Be well.
