I saw those things as well, in the end, this is a rather tragic film. I love it too btw.
Your second option makes a good point for the majority of film goers. Perhaps they found the animation too life-like realistic while not being realistic enough, so there is a disconnect with them. Audiences may prefer something more clear-cut, real or fake, with nothing in between.
Aside from The 13th Warrior, which better versions are you referring to?
& if you truly did see the film, a children's film it is not.
Have you really read the epic poem? What about other fables & legends? Don't you notice that like Beowulf himself the tales are made legendary due to its fictional nature. I liked the changes made, IMO they added to the story & as a proper legend, no one tale is the same as the other.
Also I don't consider Gaiman to be a Hollywood writer.
If you watch a lot of Hollywood films from as early as the 20s, you'll realize that films & literature are different mediums and as such are not told in the exact manner. Gaiman himself recognized it, many people should too.
Are you a girl? You know the first Austen fans were men? But now it seems to be associated only with the female gender, funny how times changes one's preferences huh?
Another nice film I found underrated but amazing is Beowulf (2007). It was co-written by Gaiman as well & directed by Zemeckis. It too was trashed upon release, have you seen it? If you have, what do you think of it? I love it btw & I just rewatched it recently.
The thing about myths & legends is they're never constant, they are ever expanding & a legend that doesn't grow in fiction dies IMO. Beowulf & his grand stories are great examples of it I thought.
Maybe that was why it was animated?
Why is the story or plot not great? I thought it was.
I don't know why you have to feel guilty about it, it's a fantastic film.
This is what I don't get in these films, how do these type of bullies get away with it?
Unfortunately I skipped this at the theaters and just saw this today and I like it a lot.
You should watch the film before deciding what it is when you haven't seen it. Things are left ambiguously in the end, and it's up to the viewer to decide about the monster. I personally interpret it to be real and an amalgamation of loved ones.
I agree. Although Connor overstepped his bounds but tbh, his pain and anger were all pent up after continuous beatings, mocking, & bullying while his beloved mother was dying (& he was close to her, not the father nor the grandmother). Imo the bully was more at fault than Connor for what happened.
That's my interpretation of Connor as well, but not only was he keeping an eye on the bully, he himself is full of hatred for his tormentor. I can certainly sympathize with that, wanting to hurt back or defend yourself but can't or won't for whatever reason.
Idk but maybe the bully had problems as well back home and was taking it out on Connor.
In many Western films, many times they have a bully tormenting another because their parent is dying or because they're very sick themselves.
I can never understand nor empathize with this cultural trait, almost alien to me, like they're not real people but monsters themselves.
Lol, I saw scarier films than this as a small child. Think Child's Play, Alien/Aliens, A Nightmare on Elm Street, It, The Fly, etc.
Just finishing this film and haven't watched T9OLD so thanks for no spoilers.
This reminds me of the type of kid's film from the 80s, today it's considered too mature I guess.
Cates looked very Angelic to be the villain here. They should've switched roles.
But this was a popular hairstyle for women then like Demi Moore in Ghost, the blonde singer from Wilson Phillips, and the pretty mom in Pet Sematary (she was also on TNG).
I always imagined Natalie Portman around the Star Wars era but who knows if she can sing even?
Whenever I think of Belle or Beauty, I think of Portman's beauty back then or Catherine Zeta Jones in her Zorro days.
Then I guess I liked the Evermore song like everyone else, lol!
