I never heard of Jorgensen, but she was very public about it. I first heard of was <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wendy_Carlos#Gender_transition">Walter/Wendy Carlos</a>, who switched in the late 60s but only came out 10 years later. I probably read about it in a music magazine. He got his lady parts in New York, so it was available in 85.
Carlos did identify as female as a child, which is required for Gender Identity Disorder/Dysphoria. It certainly is possible to have a male body and female brain, due to genetics or prenatal testosterone. There are other reasons for transition that seem fake to many of us.

Most Americans think "underage sex" means under 18, because Hollywood says so.
The age of consent in most states, Canada, much of the Americas is less, typically 16. However, most women are virgins at 16. Hollywood doesn't portray this.
