Who Did You Dislike More--Marla or Roman?

Roman was a mob boss and murderer...and yet...somehow Marla seemed even more vicious.

Excellent film that exposes the dangers of the whole guardianship system. Between this and Gone Girl, Rosamund Pike is the new villainess queen. Kudos as well to Peter Dinklage. You could sense Roman's barely-coiled rage in nearly every scene.

Food in Films: Those eclairs looked amazing. Nice touch at the end when he had the bakery box for his reunion with his mom.

I am forced to say Marla. I don’t want to defend mobsters, but at least Roman cared for his mother. Marla was actually willing to let her mother die.

Marla preyed on elderly people, while Roman preyed on young girls.

Both are very messed up. But if I am forced to choose which one is worse, I would have to say the preying on the elderly people. The girls that work as mules have, to a certain degree, a choice. Yes, they are very vulnerable and very prone to be manipulated, but they are not been forced like the elderly people were. And, for what is worth, they are supposed to get paid. So, they are not completely oblivious to their situation.

But the elderly people Marla preyed on were turned into slaves and didn’t have any choice.

Marla was a hundred times worst than Roman. The way she used old people for monetary gain was inexcusable. If I knew her game I would have taken the air out of her.

Marla was a piece of shit. She not only stole from the elderly, but but sure they were prisoners. These people weren't just in nursing homes, she ruined their lives.

reply

She did ruin their lives in so many ways. Also made me wonder what happened to those "under her care" when the money ran out for the fancy nursing homes? The film doesn't really get into it, but in cases like that are people simply put on the street?

reply

If a nursing home is doing that, they are committing a crime. You can't throw an elderly person out on the streets. When residents run out of money, they go under Medicare or Medicaid. Evicting elderly patients who can't take care of themselves is illegal: https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/some-nursing-homes-are-illegally-evicting-elderly-disabled-residents-who-n1087341

Well, that's good to know. Thanks for the knowledge.

roman was a-ok with me. i wish i was like him. without the murderousness and criminality, of course...but as an all-around person, i wish i had his confidence and charisma and general sense of cool.

i wanted marla to die die die every second she was on the screen.

Roman definitely had presence. Dinklage brings something to every part. I can't think of single mediocre performance by him. He's been in some mediocre films, but his acting is always strong.

And all due credit to Pike's performance...Marla was one of the best villains I've ever seen. She was so downright infuriating that I had to pause a few scenes because I was so mad. Now, THAT'S some good acting.

I found myself rooting for Roman.
