Will Smith likely to get first Oscar win
He got nominated for Ali and Pursuit of Happyness. But this time, he's likely to win

shareI wish people wouldnt see or use color for anything. The best should win no matter color.
I didn't watch every movie that was out this year, but from the movies i watched Will Smith was by far the best.
Who else in what movie had a great performance this year?
Bruce Willis.
Jokes aside, give Nic Cage it for Pig.
Will Smith seems to shoot for the oscar grabbing roles, or complete garbage. He's half the presence he once was. He should have got it for Ali, when he was in his prime. I didn't like his performance in the first hour of this, it was too showey without the substance.
Give it to Cage. Consistently great, even in low budget stuff, and a great show with Pig.
He won the Golden Globe tonight, so I do think he will win the Oscar as well.
shareHistorically, the BAFTA awards have been the best indicator. When Hopkins won the Best Actor for BAFTA, people started thinking he had a chance
But as OP indicated, Smith is considered a foregone conclusion for Best Actor at The Academy
Will Smith is an overrated actor. The only movie I really liked him in was Six Degrees of Separation.
shareSix Degrees of Separation is a forgotten gem. It's easily his most unique film and role.
shareYup. Unfortunately many of his other roles are just Will Smith saying "Hey look at me, I'm Will F'ing Smith"! We are supposed to give a damn. Please, just play the role.
shareI would say in most of his films he plays "Will Smith" regardless of the name of the character. There are a few exceptions though, like Six Degrees, Ali, Pursuit of Happyness, and I would say King Richard falls into that category as well. That said, even when he's trying to do something different and really act, he is still quite clearly Will Smith making the effort. He never really disappears into the role or becomes unrecognizable.
shareRight and that is my point. There are many actors who actually aren't recognizable just because they are so immersed in their character. Will Smith can't shake his persona no matter how hard he tries. It is what always has annoyed me about him. It worked really well in Six Degrees, but movie after movie he really just plays a hyper version of himself. He has ruined a lot of movies that I probably would have liked, but don't because he is in it. Will Smith doesn't deserve the Oscar, but I think he is going to win because everyone thinks they have to vote for him. I think that Cumberbatch's performance is 100 times better than Will Smith's performance.
shareGood point. I did feel like it was Will Smith trying to be somebody else. At points, it felt like he was trying a little too hard, and being self aware. The first hour wasn't great, then he improved through the last part.
shareFrankly, it may be that he's just not that great of an actor. I really don't know what the X-factor is that gives some actors the ability to really BECOME the character they're playing, but it seems that some actors have it and some just don't. Willie seems to be one that doesn't have it, but rather gets by on charisma and screen presence.
shareWell...at least he won. Unless the Academy takes it away.
