Why not a black Ethan Hunt?

Any thoughts? Since so many want a black Bond?

Make love, not sense

Why not create an own franchise centered around a black agent? Like...ehm...Tenet? Oh, wait, because it sucks a little? Because more than "many" people are NOT interested in? So hey, better jump on the bandwagon of an already existing franchise, right?

I suggested t that in the James Bond discussions and keep getting refuted with circular logic. my post was sardonic.

Yeah, I wonder why. I mean, there were some movies with black lead that were quite succesful, Man on Fire with Denzel Washington, for example. They could easily pulled a franchise from that. In the vein of, say, Taken. Or John Wick. But no, it has not even one sequel.

There was actually one that I really liked back then. Blade with Wesley Snipes. Too bad Snipes was "cancelled."

Concerning Denzel: For him they even blackwashed the equalizer character. And as I like him a lot I did not mind this racial switch. But audience lost interest already with the second part of the franchise.

I had never seen the original Equalizer so when I saw the Denzel's version I was like oh wow this is actually not bad at all! I was so excited when they released the sequel. But it was terrible. The whole third act with the sniper villain is so incredibly stupid.

That said, I think they can actually still soldier on with another sequel. I mean, The Matrix 2 was baaad but they managed to make Matrix 3 (and now even Matrix 4.) Hell, John Wick 2 was pretty weak too and we still got John Wick 3 (and probably 4 soon.) Die Hard 2 was underwhelming, but then we have Die Hard 3, 4 and 5.

2 Fast 2 Furious was trash, but look how successful that franchise is today. If they make another Denzel's Equalizer I'll watch it certainly.

for the same reason fans get annoyed at race swapping black characters.Race swapping characters doesn't add anything. It's just SJW pandering nonsense.

reply

If they do a reboot, then why not?
But it wouldn't make sense if it was supposed to be the same continuity.

How about a White Shaft?

reply

I have suggested that, too. It drove people crazy.

because: obvious logic

I have no objection but I think the reality is that there are not many men, black or white, who can carry a serialized action franchise. For example, Tommy Lee Jones seemed like he was in everything, for a period of time, but not as the same character. It was a lot of different movies about different characters. And he wasn't always the main character.
