I think it's a little low on your list. I would put it ahead of Spider-Man: Far From Home, Ant-Man and Iron Man 2. Might put it ahead of Captain Marvel as well, though I did enjoy CM well enough despite the fact that Brie Larson is an unlikable cunt.
I think you have Cap 1, Black Panther and Doctor Strange as little low as well. For instance, I enjoyed all three but tried to watch Ant-Man twice and couldn't get through it. Cap 1 is actually pretty underrated in general, I think.
I've tried with the first Captain America film. I left the theater after my initial viewing feeling disappointed. It felt a bit empty, especially in comparison to the two Iron Man films, and the Thor film, that preceded it. I've watched it twice again since then, and my opinion hasn't changed.
I especially disliked the ending, where they tried to shoehorn in an emotional goodbye, with the foregone conclusion that he was going to crash and die. For all the things we'd seen him do up until that point, there was no reason to believe he wouldn't try to send the plane into a nose dive and bail out with his shield before the crash. Instead, he blithely sat there saying "well, I'm gonna die, no use grousin' about it," rather than try to survive. It was very unlike anything we'd seen from the character before that, or anything we've seen since, and it really ruined the film for me.
Inevitable indeed (expected Bill B to take this one as always tho).
Well for me it’s… EASILY TOP 5! Top-tier film, it just kicks major ass!
Oh yes, it’s that uncool high praise that you rarely see up here! (Representing the actual majority out there I am.) And man, so cool to see how many fans already consider it a top 5 entry as well. Everyone who called it a triumphant (alternate reality-living detractors will scream their usual tired buzzwords) couldn’t have been more correct. Nuff said
It was a lot of things. Mostly, it felt too pat. For the better part of 21 excellent films, we built to a conclusion in which Thanos defeated everyone, and implemented his plan, then in one film it's all undone. I didn't mind the time travel much at all. It was how easily the Avengers gathered all six Infinity Stones-- a feat which Thanos the better part of a lifetime-- and undid the events of the previous film. And then, of course, the obligatory massive CGI battle in which we need to see every character we've ever encountered, and, again of course, a battle in which nary a hero is scratched, but the enemy is reduced to (literal) dust.
They should have ended it with Infinity War. If Thanos won, so be it. They can make more films, and just chalk that one up as an L. Or, end Infinity War in some manner whereby Thanos doesn't win. Instead they undo everything in a manner that is, as that guy on YouTube says "super easy, barely an inconvenience."
Also-- Infinity War is brilliant, and it was rather fitting that Thanos did come out on top. We were witnessing his hero's journey, and he overcame all obstacles in his path to achieve his glory. That we were rooting for his enemies all along is a bit unfortunate, but when it comes down to it, it was a bold move to end with the "villain" victorious, and stopping the story there, before continuing on to tell new stories, would have been a bold and unprecedented move that would have become cinema legend in years to come. They may as well have done a Bob Newhart and had Tony Stark wake up from a bad dream in which some purple guy beat him.
to me, it's the best mcu film, one of the few, maybe the only one that i would point to as being a flat-out triumph, perfect at what it was trying to do.
You say you don't mind the time travel, but then complain that the Avengers gathered the stones easily when it took Thanos a lifetime (it actually took him a couple of days, however long Infinity War took place fore....but whatever), but the only reason they were able to do this was because they had time travel, which Thanos didn't have, and 4 of the six stones were located on earth.
Your complaints about the final battle are just crazy. The enemy was reduced to dust because Tony used the infinity gauntlet. Tony died, after being beaten up twice. Thor got beaten up. Cap got the shit kicked out of him. Peter got blown up by missiles....he definitely had some scratches. Valkyrie got blown out of the sky. Presumably your complaint is that they weren't killed or injured during the battle by any of the minions? I mean, that would have made a great movie wouldn't it, in an already loaded film showing some pointless things like that during the battle that did nothing to further the plot or add to the drama......ehhh what??
The final battle was the single greatest thing in the entire franchise. If you disagree you are dumb and you smell.
I haven't seen all the marvel shit. But this is my personal tier list:
1. Infinity War
2. Captain America: The First Avenger
3. Black Panther
4. Avengers 1
5. Shang Chi
6. Endgame
7. Antman and the Wasp
8. Guardians of the Galaxy 2
9. Antman
10. The Winter Soldier
11. Guardians of the Galaxy 1
12. Civil War
13. Age of Ultron
14. Iron Man 2
15. Captain Marvel
16. Doctor Strange
17. Thor
18. The Incredible Hulk
19. Thor Ragnarok
20. Spiderman Homecoming
I can't see any pattern to your preferences. Spider-man homecoming is the definition of a well written and acted film that most people like, but nobody loves and nobody hates. Yet you have it at the bottom. Then right above it you have Ragnarok, that a lot of people love, put some Thor purists dislike. Above that you have The Incredible Hulk which most people agree is one of the worst films. At number 1 you have Infinity War, which many people rank as number one, but right below it you have The First Avenger, which could suggest that you like the movies that stick closely to comicbook lore, except you have Shang Chi at number 5, which retcons practically everything about Shang Chi and the Mandarin. You have Ant Man and the Wasp above Ant man, but its just an inferior version of the first movie. Like I said, it's just random.
lol and like I said, I'm not surprised ppl will find it random. I find that I don't get along very much with mainstream sentiments on these films.
The list is based on a mix of both subjective preference, and what I ascertain to be objective quality. I don't think there's a thematic pattern to be found; I certainly didn't try to give it one when I wrote out the list. The only thing this list show is....is how I much I liked these films and rank them.
I have no desire to go into any large detail but I can share a few thoughts. Not looking to argue or defend any of these views. Just making it clear that I didn't make this list randomly. This is how I feel about these movies.
Spiderman Homecoming - I think the film is extremely boring. I also do not like the MCU depiction of the Peter Parker character.
Ragnarok - Very inconsistent pacing/progression. I don't appreciate the tonal shift from the previous films. Horrible final act (in terms of an action film). Misguided approach to the ragnarok arc.
The Incredible Hulk - well, I seem to agree with most people here, which is why it's at the bottom of the list.
The First Avenger/Infinity War/Shang Chi - I consider adherence to comicbook lore as a minor factor, but it's not at all a crucial factor for me in evaluating a film.
Ant Man and the Wasp - I think the story is more interesting, villains more interesting, action sequences are cooler, jokers are funnier, and overall I find the pacing much improved.
It is by no means a bad film-- even the worst of the MCU is still quite good-- but it's severely lacking in comparison to other films in the franchise. I think of them in tiers, as follows:
A+ = Movies that are excellent films in their own right, and transcend the superhero genre
Captain America: The Winter Soldier
Spider-Man: Homecoming
The Avengers
Avengers: Infinity War
Thor: Ragnarok
Spider-Man: Far From Home
A = Movies that are great, but not all-time classics; great superhero films
Guardians of the Galaxy
Captain America: Civil War
Loki
Ant-Man
Iron Man 2
Iron Man
Captain Marvel
A- = Solid films, not quite on par with those above
Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings
WandaVision
Thor
Doctor Strange
Captain America: The First Avenger
Black Widow
Avengers: Age of Ultron
B+ = Good movies, some great moments, but flawed in some ways, can be enjoyed on multiple viewings
Black Panther
Avengers: Endgame
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2
Ant-Man and the Wasp
Thor: The Dark World
The Incredible Hulk
Iron Man 3
B- = Not terrible, not great, nothing one would want to watch twice
I like it better, so yes, I ranked it higher. Iron Man is a very good film, with flaws. Iron Man 2 had flaws as well, but its high points were better than its predecessor's. Mickey Rourke was a much better villain than Jeff Bridges, and Sam Rockwell was hilarious when he was onscreen. Also, I disliked the ending of Iron Man. Iron Man won too easily, and in a way that didn't hold with the rest of the film. "If you push this button, I'll die." Button is pushed. Villain dies, Stark inexplicably survives.
