Who even is this character from DC?

Never even heard of him. He sounds more obscure than Shazam. I feel a flop coming for this show just based on the lack of name recognition alone.

Black Adam thought it would make $1b (only around $400m) and we know how Shazam 2 turned out. I don't think it'll make as much as Black Adam did but it will surpass Shazam 2 for sure.

Either way it seems very generic, especially the old lady villain and geared towards tweens. The AI sounds corny as heck like when she said you can imagine anything you want part of the trailer.

Of course since I am sucker I will still see it. At least they got the costume and actor look alike right on the comics.

It looks like a push for the Hispanic market. The character is hispanic and they'll be speaking Spanish. I hope they don't switch between languages again since that Everything Everywhere movie kept hopping between English and Chinese subtitles.

reply

They will. It's Spanglish from what I can see. Mostly will be in English but Spanish when with some homies or whatnot. This is like the MCU equivalent for Shang-Chi.

Update: I see why I never heard of him, he's mostly associated with Teen Titans.

reply

Well I won't be watching it unless the official title becomes: Escarabajo Azul

reply

I'd probably watch it if it showed up on one of my channels or streaming services. I wouldn't pay additional money to see it. I'm mainly interested in the Justice League heroes.

reply

There's like 3 versions of this character.

More obscure than Shazam!πŸ˜‚

Shazam/Captain Marvel is hardly obscure. But everything revolves around you, huh?πŸ™„πŸ˜’

reply

Shazam is a very obscure character for anyone under the age of about 50. But then again, Iron Man, Thor, Captain America, the Guardians of the Galaxy... pretty much all the big MCU titles were based on C- and D-List heroes. They only became popular after the films were released. In the highly unlikely event that Blue Beetle is a good movie, he has every chance of becoming as popular as Iron Man. Sadly, the DCEU movies are never any good.

reply

I'm more than a decade under your asserted parameter, wasn't a comic book reader, and I am and was well aware of Captain Marvel/Shazam prior to the films. Being obscure and not a top-tier hero isn't synonymous. Iron Man wasn't a top seller for Marvel but you'd be hard pressed to find an adult that wasn't a recluse that hadn't heard of him pre-MCU.

reply

There are exceptions to everything, but generally speaking, Shazam's last big moment was his Saturday morning show in the mid-'70s. That doesn't mean no one who didn't watch that would know who he was, only that he won't resonate with *most* younger people. The same can be said about, say, W.C. Fields or Bing Crosby. Some younger people know them, but ask the average 20-something who they are and you'll get blank stares. Iron Man was the same before the film came out. You'd have had a lot more difficulty finding a non-comic fan that knew who he was than one who didn't back in 2004 or so. It's easy to imagine otherwise now, because of how famous the character has become, but Iron Man, Thor, Hawkeye, Black Widow, Captain America-- all those early MCU heroes were unknown to the general public in the pre-MCU days.

reply

GA's will certainly have never heard of him but Blue Beetle has a pretty dedicated following amongst DC fans.

reply

Well, they best turn out for this one if they want it to become a franchise.

reply

That is true.

reply

Never heard of him myself.

Blue Beetle, in various incarnations, has been around since 1939. He has never been a major character, true. However, bringing minor super heroes into successful films has been a bit of the hallmark of the current superhero film craze. Granted, Marvel has done a better job of it than DC.

This version of the character is obscure but he has only been around for a few years. The previous version was more like a high tech Batman. They killed him off for shock value (I Think). Then they gave the original Blue Bettle's power source to Jaime and completely changed his power set.
