Saw it last night

I'm not sure if I would go as far to say it's a masterpiece, but easily one of the best films of the last year. The filmmaking here is absolutely incredible. The cinematography, score, performances are all A game. I know it sounds cliche, but I was just an absolute awe the entire time admiring this on a technical level. It really did feel like I was transported back in time watching a classic American epic film that we just don't see anymore.

Adrien Brody and Guy Pearce both deserve Oscars for their performances. Joe Alwyn was great as well. I think the one aspect where the film falls flat a bit is the story, practicably the ending. The first half pre Intermission is perfect, and while I liked the 2nd half which most people seem to be divided on, I felt like it started to collapse under it's own ambition and wasn't able to tie up all the themes in a way that stuck a landing. Their is also a pivotal scene towards the end where the writing just felt bad and out of place in tone with everything that came before.

I will be seeing it again at some point, but as of now I would give it a 8.5/10

Was it anti-American, pro-immigration propaganda?

reply

No.

reply

Really? Trailer seems to show evil white rich Guy Pearce exploiting poor genius migrant Jew Brody…

reply

Who’s gonna pick yer fruit, whitey?

reply

White people can pick their own fruit, as they have done for centuries.

reply

then get to it, cracker

reply

No, dickhead, someone will pay a white teenager to do it, as happened for centuries.

reply

High schoolers suddenly want to pick fruit now for work? 🤣

Luckily you live in a trailer park so you can grow your own vegetables

reply

Yes, and they will be paid well for it, because the Turd World migrants won’t be undercutting their wages. The system will revert to the superior one we lived under for centuries.

reply

Listen, white people don’t want to be picking fruit in a field in 98 degree heat for $18 an hour, they’d rather be working in an air-conditioned warehouse.

Your plan to revert back to the 1700s is not going to work.

reply

No, they did do it, and when the wage-undercutting migrants are gone they’ll do it again.

reply

No they won’t, they will start demanding the “wage-cutting immigrants” to come back and pick their fruit for them. Your plan is a load of bollocks.

reply

No they won’t, because they have seen how mass migration has destroyed their country.

reply

Who is “they”? These magical teenagers that will suddenly want to pick your fruit for you? Why can’t you do it yourself?

reply

Moron. ‘They’ are the people we’ve been discussing this whole time. Pay attention.

reply

you don’t know who “they” are, dumb cattlefuck, it’s a figment of your imagination.

reply

OK we’re dealing with a new level of retardation here.

Treating you like an equal is starting to feel like an act of cruelty and I’m not that mean, so I’ll leave you to it.

If an adult reading this thinks that ‘AnthonySocksss’ has a remotely valid point in this thread, or feels I haven’t sufficiently debunked his bullshit, then please let me know and I’ll be happy to clarify.

AnthonySocksss, I want you to end this discussion by showcasing your psychosis. Write a block of text in which you desperately try to convince yourself that you’re automatically right about everything by virtue of being you. Go…

You probably have quite a few opinions about what's going on after this previous election cycle, but it's important to remember one thing - you're wrong. Here's why: To start, you're completely missing the point and everything you think is actually at odds with reality when you look at the data. In fact, you're nowhere close to being accurate. It's simple to understand when you stop for a second and actually look at the issues. Once you open your eyes, you'll see that you're wrong about each and every one of them. Wrong, wrong, wrong, wrong. But what about this other thing i heard -- no! If the past is any indication of the future, not only is there no chance that you'll ever be right, all signs suggest you will never even come close once in your lifetime. The only way you'll ever be right is to repeat everything I say word for word to every single person you know. until then, you're wrong.

reply

Are you a White Supremacist or just a Maga Moron?

reply

He's a thorough-going troll & moron.

reply

Who the fuck are you?

reply

How does it compare to other Oscar nominated films.

reply

It's probably my favorite of the bunch. Only one that it rivals is Dune 2

reply

Just wondered. Because I have been trying to go see it but it is so long that the cost of parking is twice that of the movie ticket. I plan to see today. I like all the films nominated and some that weren’t but the one I didn’t like was Wicked. I didn’t like Maria either.

reply

I just saw it. It is a most complex and brilliant opus but was also very difficult to watch and I have to say not really enjoyable. It was very long but you couldn’t cut any scenes. There are two holocausts - literal and figurative. One in Europe and the one in the US. The inverted cross and the inverted Statue of Liberty. It’s all symmetrical like Brutalism. A person has to see this in a theater. The images are architectural in itself. It’s probably one of the best bios I have ever seen of a fictional character.

You didn’t say how good Felicity Jones was (Brody and Pearce it goes without saying). Felicity and Zoe are the best in that category with Jones edging out, for me. I loved the ending. What didn’t land for you. What was the pivotal scene. The writing was excellent. And wasn’t that library exquisite.

As magnificent as this movie is, I don’t think it will be a favorite of mine. It’s very painful to watch. Actually, it is brutal to watch. My favorites are Emilia Pérez and Conclave. I loved The Substance but I also loved The Apprentice and A Real Pain and Flow and Nosferatu. I see Nickel Boys next week. I never saw Dune 2 - hoping it comes out again so I can see it in a theater although I really didn’t like Dune 1. I Am Still Here is really Roma all over again. And Wicked is a very silly movie.

reply

Intermission? I'm glad they're being in those back. Is there an overture?

reply

Yes there is an overture during the intermission. It last for 15 minutes.

reply

No, I meant an overture at the beginning.

reply

Yes, there is one during the opening scene.

reply

Awesome. Just like Hollywood used to do.

reply

Thanks, all. Does it need to be seen in a theatre ? I'm on the fence, but can see it STD, IMAX or wait for it to stream.

reply

I would see it in IMAX if you can.

reply

Thanks ! I will. :)
