I LOVED it....Thought it had some amazing Action Sequences, Thought Hemsworth was Great in the role.
Would Bet money this becomes a new Franchise and we get a few more sequels with Hemsworth "Tyler Rake" becoming a new action bad-ass...
also believe the director has a bright future...This was his first movie, He was a stunt man and coordinator on The Russo Bothers Marvel Movies..... could see him getting some offers to direct Major movies in the future...
It's a little strange how Hemsworth's movie career outside of the Marvel films has gone. He's immensely popular as Thor, but his non-Marvel projects tend to fail at the box office.
I enjoyed Rush, Blackhat, In the Heart of the Sea, 12 Strong, and Bad Times at the El Royale, but none of them performed well. In fact, Blackhat and In the Heart of the Sea were huge box office failures. El Royale also lost money. Rush and 12 Strong maybe made a little after hitting home video, but it wasn't a whole lot.
It's honestly baffling. The work in those movies is excellent, but I didn't like them. Very well made movies that did nothing for me. For whatever reason, Hemsworth is just missing the magic touch.
As a counter point, i'll put up Matt Damon. I love Matt Damon. But he makes a lot of shitty movies and I just don't care. I'll watch em over and over. What does Matt have that Chris is missing?
Hemsworth is gorgeous. And he's charming. And when you see him in interviews, that's a guy you wanna have a beer with. But for some reason, in his movies, he's very stale. I think the right material, the right character, would really open him up. Maybe a bounty hunter driving a classic muscle car who wears vintage metal T shirts. Ends up taking down a right wing extremist gang in the first movie.
I have always very like he's very good, but unappreciated. I don't know why he hasn't been fully embraced outside of his work as Thor, but it seems that this is the fact of many of the Marvel actors. Chris Evans doesn't have a ton of hits outside of the Marvel universe either.
As for your idea, I'm totally down with a bounty hunter . . . classic muscle car . . . vintage metal T-shirts. . . But I'm over the typical leftist themes out of Hollywood. Let's go have him kick the shit out of Antifa instead and I'll sign on.
It was good. Excellent direction. I don't know how they got some of those shots. Amazing action sequences.
Down Side. (Spoilers)
1) Too many cops dying. Literally dozens or maybe over a hundred. I know the were following the orders of the colonel who was on the drug lord's payroll, but was that kid's life worth the lives of a hundred of regular Bangladeshi cops? After he killed the first few cops, no wonder the other cops were gunning for him. Based on the amount of mayhem caused, Hemsworth was basically a foreign terrorist.
2) Pistol rounds do not go through body armor. All those cops had body armor and many of the shots were aimed at the chest.
Yes, that was a bit disturbing. They just followed the orders of a corrupt colonel, who surely told them that a dangerous terrorist is on the streets, thus justifying their mission.
Change the setting and I think people would be outraged. Lets make it clear that he was knowingly working for one drug lord against another drug lord.
If the kid was being held in San Diego and Hemsworth had to kill 100 cops and border patrol agents trying to get the kid safely to Mexico, I think most people would have a huge problem with it.
In Terminator 2, they made a point of telling Arnie not to kill cops.
Pistol rounds may not go thru body armor but they still hurt like hell and slow people down. I made sure to notice how the finishing rounds were always to the neck or the armpit area (basically exposed areas).
Yeah that was a bit over the top for all the cops and military being killed.
In regards to the body army it would depend on the rounds potentially and also for most shots he shot them multiple times in around the same spot. Essentially body armour is only good for one use once it’s been hit they replace it as it’s intergeity isn’t as solid anymore and they’re less safe. So multiple shots in the same location could make the rounds penetrate as it’s weakened.
He also seemed to try and go for the open spots the armour didn’t cover to finish them off.
Hemsworth was great in the role, the story was solid, the characters were interesting, and the action is extremely well-done.
In the age of coronavirus where we aren't getting any new big budget movies, this was a breath of fresh air. I liked it quite a bit.
If I have a complaint, it's that the director perhaps relies a little too much on visual effects at times, because it's not seamless and you can tell something a little goofy is going on.
I will definitely check out more of the director's films in the future.
I'll also point out that this thing just came out of nowhere. I only heard about it for the first time yesterday. A very pleasant surprise.

^^^
completely agree with this...
The director went with that one 12 minute action scene that was supposed to look like a "Oner"...it was an amazing sequence and incredibly well done, But the points at which they tried to hide the "Cuts" were very obvious.....
I noticed in almost every action sequence, They tried to make it seem like it was one continuous shot, But The cuts really stuck out in either Visually effects shots or when they would focus the camera in real close....
I thought it’s really good and yes Chris Hemsworth is proving to be a great action star and actor.
Now i thought it could have been done with less violence but that’s just me.
I gave this a chance knowing it was Rated R because of Chris Hemsworth but While I do love action movies I like them more sanitized more PG- 13 I don’t think films should be R to be good.
There are plenty of good PG-13 action movies, but there's a certain verisimilitude to films that portray violence as exactly what it is, and don't hide the brutality of people getting kicked in the head, shot, stabbed and blown up.
I'm thinking of films like John Wick, Olympus Has Fallen, or The Terminator with PG-13 ratings and I'm certain they would be lesser films.
i understand what you say but I feel like some films are really just R tatted to shock but at the end if the actors do their job right and the script and director know how to tell us a good story the explicit violence is not that needed.
Logan wasn’t good because it was violent or rated R but because it had a good story to close Wolverine’s arc in the X Men franchise. Yes they can include a bit of blood but at end it’s all about telling us a good story and good acting.
For Example The MCU it was always PG-13 and still the verisimilitude was still there. We don’t need violence to be that explicit.
We saw Wolverine work just fine in the First X men trilogy within a PG-13 rating.
i would agree that PG-13 violence can "work," but I would not agree that the "verisimilitude is still there" in most superhero films. The effects of the violence are definitely toned down and whitewashed in comic book films. In reality, if some of the stuff happened in real life that happens in comic films, there would be mangled bodies all over the place and the walls would be drenched in blood, but those films don't show you that. They don't even really imply it.
I completely agree that R brings something different to an action film, but while I'm an admitted junkie for stuff like that and great effects in action and horror movies, I also look at it from another perspective. Sanitized action films misrepresent violence and make it look more fun. I take Krav Maga (teach it too) and not trying to brag at all, but I know some ways to damage people. I do my best to think I wouldn't be that squeamish if I ever had to use it (and I truly hope I never do), but I probably would be, at least once the adrenaline dump wears off. But we do discuss what will happen when we execute a certain move or combative, and we also discuss the legal consequences after. However, kids see the sanitized version and think it looks cool and fun without seeing any consequence (that was totally me!). Also, ever notice that PG-13 movies have the highest body counts, but move on like almost nothing happened? No consequences. But, violence like that portrayed in movies has consequences, and I like that hard R movies, while entertaining and fun, still do depict some sort of consequence.
We have enough sappy PG-13 crap these days. We need more R-rated flicks like this. Having grown up with the likes of Schwarzeneggar, Stallone, Van Damme, Segal, Willis, etc, it makes today's stuff look so watered down. Seeing this movie the way it was is a breath of fresh air.
Lol, thinks we’re still in the 2000’s back when PG-13 action films (not just those belonging to big franchises) dominated the scene and were by and large the only ones that made a killing at the box office it does. Don’t think so, playa. Where u at, J Wick?!
But again lol.... Extraction, though perhaps more violent than your standard action fare (that includes the old school stuff), screams gritty R rated modern action film. Its tone, direction, choreography, performances, VIOLENCE... this film is absolutely of its time. Is it one of the best I’ve seen? The action is unquestionably top-notch, maybe some of the best. But as an overall film... nope, it ain’t. The reason I say this is because I, for one, have actually seen the more interesting, unpredictable, tense, better-developed and expertly-crafted EXCELLENT action films that have come out in the last several years. And yes, you better believe Netflix has no shortage of ultra-violent modern action stuff (from original movies+shows to movies that were released in theaters). So fresh breath of air? Excuse me, but, too easy to figure out you are; seen what’s really out there I doubt it.
It took you back to ‘em good ol’ edgy days? Whoa. I must say, it’s amusing how this feeling is always ‘preached’ by a certain crowd whenever a modern film appeals to said crowd. The real funny thing is, this Hemsworth film makes a lot of those super violent... but really mostly cheesy... 80’s/90’s Van Damme, Seagal, Stallone, Norris, etc. flicks look like, well, the badly-made cheese-fests that they are. Even the likes of Commando (almost any old Arnie flick that isn’t Predator or Terminator) and the beloved Die Hard are hard to take seriously compared to Extraction tone-wise. And to reiterate, as good as the action is, for me Extraction is by no means the best example of a great gritty modern action film.
Bearing that in mind, for all the unoriginal oldhead complaints about how modern action cinema (cinema in general) is unkewl and “clean” compared to a lot of dated as hell 80’s/90’s action flicks, the truth is that is mostly BS. Action movie with lots of blood and guts? Doesn’t automatically mean that that particular movie is better or, yes, even more badass (let alone more mature) than a non-rated R action film. Check this....https://www.nbcnews.com/healthmain/pg-13-movies-are-now-more-violent-r-rated-80s-8C11566223
2 words: BOO YA! :-D “Fake news! But PC! Back in my day!”.... oh please. And let’s not get started with the numerous R rated modern action joints that truly make so much of the old stuff look tame AF.
But yes, the old bombastic era was more hardcore fo’ sho. XD Oh sure, I’m a fan of the classics - especially the quality ones that actually hold up well compared to the regular cringey Stallone, Van Damme, Norris and Seagal crap. XD Still, I’ll HAPPILY take the numerous modern PG-13 films that were legitimately well-made (and far more sophisticated and mature, to boot) over the plethora of hilarious “unsappy” mindless 80’s & 90’s action flicks any day of the week. Yes, and give me the “rare” visceral R rated modern stuff as well!
I get it though. Your crowd thinks a certain way and it shall continue to preach a certain “back in my day” saying. As such... https://i.imgflip.com/3jvrcl.jpg
Nice thesis, bro. What is my "crowd"? Don't eve know where to start with the rest of your stuff lol. John Wick is legit. But sorry, R-rated films like John Wick (which I love) and Extraction are becoming more and more the minority in favor of PG-13 stuff. I certainly didn't say PG-13 movies can't be/aren't good so give me a break. You waxed-on and basically projected a whole bunch of BS that I didn't say. Again, having more R-rated movies is a breath of fresh air.
