finally watching it

currently just finished ep 3 on the bluray (no I don't stream so this is first time I seen it) so far am impressed, its pretty much the first proper Star Trek since Nemesis (or at least ST09 as Nero and Spock were from the primeverse).. pretty much the 5th TNG film only instead of 2 hours its 10 or thereabouts with what must be a budget comparable to the later TNG films and tying in nicely with Nemesis - basically if Nemesis was 'The Wrath of Khan' of TNG then this is the belated 'Search for Data' and has a similar scene of Picard begging an Admiral for a ship to try bring back his friend before doing the 'i am therefore going anyway' (in fact this is probably what would've happened had Kirk not stolen the Enterprise and had to charter a merchant ship like the one seen in the opening of Trek III and has similar 'renegade' elements from that movie) and obviously all the Borg stuff, and 2009 Trek with the Romulan supernova (and Romulans using Borg tech) .. and even elements of Blade Runner(android workforce, android thinking its human/implanted memory, daughter) and of course the harder edge violence/gore is obviously Game of Thrones inspired(but then Trek has always been abit cutting edge with that stuff) and theres some obvious Marvel Guardians ragtag crew meets R rated Logan stuff (where PS has said he got inspiration for doing the series) and whole belated sequel with original cast members popping up is no doubt inspired by The Force Awakens (which itself was inspired by Star Trek 2009)

Am perplexed by the negativity I read online before now with naysayers saying its as bad as Discovery, too woke, doesn't feel like Star Trek ., so far I'm not getting anything of that and it feels like a natural progression from Nemesis (and All Good Things). We'll see I guess as I continue on..

finished - yeh I can see why some have problems with it as it kind of falls apart in the final 2 eps (directed by Akiva Goldsman) despite the rather excellent Picard/Data Zathura goodbye . Picard's death/rebirth is really a wtf jump the shark/nuke the fridge thing..(which I had obviously had spoiled way back last year about a hundred times over before I finally discovered the Mute option on Twitter.. and also recall everyone moaning about Riker on the USS Copy/Paste instead of being on the Enterprise as if that was a major plot hole! lol.. like why/how the hell would he be able to commandeer the flagship of the Federation to help Picard at a moments notice omg fans sometimes smh)

that being said...it was fun! just fun to see the Picard era back 20years later in a kind of 'TNG Awakens' .. yeh I know its not proper TNG but like PStew said that's been done a thousand times over and hed never have done that again (e.g something like Admiral Picard taking command of a new Enterprise F after some new threat to the Federation and enlists his old crew). having Picard encountering them in cameos on a belated 'Star Trek III' quest is entirely believable and we'll no doubt see the rest in s2. obviously 7of9 got a bigger supporting role as she was a very popular character, never interacted with TNG and more importantly the actress is still smoking hot! and able to compete with any younger hot ones like the Romulan villainess (as obviously she was only early 30s in the late 1990s on VOY unlike all the other Trek vets now well into their 60s and 70s)

it was also refreshing that it wasnt overly SJW/woke orientated (like Disco) ..just that silly forced bit at the end with 7 and Raffi (shades of the kiss at the end of TROS)

one thing I noticed is the previously 'canon' Trek 2009 Countdown comic written by Kurtzman/Orci has been 'un-canond' as in that Picard was the Vulcan Ambassador and Data/B4 was Captain of the Enterprise E (and no mention of synth attack) unless those elements could be incorporated into the Picard continuity somehow but dont see how, (however the romulans using Borg tech was retained)

Hmm. about that..

I disagree - I saw plenty of big issues early on - the whole world was changed into some kind of weird PS.
Picard was turned into a feeble old man - same thing they've done to proff. X - in Logan.

things change , and so do people

Patrick Stewart is going to be 83 this year. He can't exactly play young anymore.

When I said feeble, I didn't mean his physicality - but his mental/intellectual being (character).

reply

Well he is a feeble old man....well a feeble old android now... 😂
