The design of the Doll was an issue

It's frustrating that I enjoyed the film but I did have a struggle to accept the look of the Doll. Even if it's suppose to look like a real Doll, it's incredibly ugly. These big fat lips, dead blue eye, Thin eyebrow...Who would want this for their kids? It bothered me more because beside that I really had fun with this film, it was the type of cheesy horror film I liked as a kid. BUT the ugly doll stops it from being even better.

I think this movie was a God damn breath of fresh air. I mean after Halloween 2018 killed it in the box office with a subpar addition to the franchise, I was convinced the next line of horror remakes weren't really going to give it their all because Halloween 2018 just showed everyone people will pay for shit as long as their is an iconic slasher attached to it. I thought this was going to be the case for Child's Play and my little pony riding ass-muncher Chucky.

Not a bad movie at all. I had low expectations, but that probably made the movie more enjoyable for me in the end. I really would've loved this movies as a kid; I mean this movie had all kinds of rad shit going for it. But -- and there always seems to be a "but" -- you are right: This Chucky doll, it's fugly shit and was more of a distraction than it needed to be. I mean they used art from the original Child's Play smash hit motion picture. Why not just use … the real Chucky? Why fuck with something that doesn't need fucking with because of wind whispers.

Pretty much sums up my feelings; went in with really low expectations and when it simply wasn't bad, I ended up really enjoying it.

The thing is they make the dolls more ugly on purpose, for the viewer. The dolls in real life would be more cute, cuddly, and adorable. I'm not sure the cinematic experience would better or worse having Killer Winnie the Pooh vs Killer Quasimodo.

Exactly! Well said

What bothered me was at one point, when the power to the doll was cut off, the eyes "flatlined" to black. The whole rest of the time, I didn't think that the eyes (especially their whites) were little screens, but just plain plastic eyes with red or blue glowing lights in them to denote mood, so that CGI bit with them going to black threw me.

I'm in agreement also. Right out of the box and this thing was ugly.
The clothing was the classic "My Buddy" clothes from the 80's but the look of the doll seemed rather menacing from the beginning. This was a "high tech" Chucky. The technology would obviously appeal to older kids but not that look. I dont think this look would market well in a "real world" situation.
I honestly dont remember, did they make ones that looked different?
My buddy had African American ones and ones with blond or brown hair.

I purchased the DVD and got my answer.
The SECOND generation Buddi dolls had several different models with different looks, although I think that most involved different hair colors although they didn't elaborate on all of the differences.
For those who thought the doll was ugly, look at the Buddi BEAR. It was worse yet.

In the special features there are comments that the director LIKED the new design and look.
I dont think this feeling was shared by most viewers.
Frankly I would find it "TURN OFF" if I were thinking of purchasing one.

If you recall, "My Buddy" dolls evolved with different hair colors, an African American one and a girl called Kid Sister with different hair colors.
I would hope that the Kaslan Buddi doll would evolve into some more pleasing varieties and genders, although the bear certainly was ugly.
The Doll in the movie was said to be First Generation edition.

I agree, not feeling the new design.

Haven't seen the movie yet...wanted to go yesterday and it pulled from all my local theaters already.

That felt fast

try a discount movie theater if you have one in your area bloodworth. Here we have one called Movies 10.

I think they knew no matter what they made the "new doll" look like, it would always be compared to the original Chucky and fail in comparison. So they just tried to make it as fugly as they could.

Lol

I admit I liked the movie but the doll made me laugh every time. I don’t know if that’s what they were going for but I just thought he had a crazy face and mannerisms.

He did. especially his mouth

I owned an original Chucky Doll for nearly 10 years, I sold it a few months ago on ebay but have to say I wasn't let down by the design of the doll at all. The story is different from the original. Updated for modern times. The idea of an out of control AI is more believable than a weirdo conducting a voodoo seance to put his soul into a doll. I like this retelling or re-imagination of the original, I loved the look of the original doll. As I said I owned a Sideshow Collectibles doll for nearly 10 years. I'd still own it if I didn't come upon hard times and need to sell it. The Chucky doll doesn't look as good as he original in my view, but it's also not horrible and I think the movie was very good. Expected it to suck, but it didn't

reply

Yeah I still liked it very much as well

As I remember, there was a rather rare Chucky that looked as he did right out of the box.
Then there were ones that looked evil with all sorts of cuts, scars and wounds that were meant to be scary.
Which did you have?
