Impossible to watch now due to the Cultural Appropriation
Gosh, I've got to say I was shocked! The children were hugely disappointed that the Eurovision song contest was cancelled this year. They've been brought up on this and it's amazing all inclusiveness, shedding tears of genuine hope as they watched a beautiful bearded lady win just a couple of years ago...
Anyway it started off ok with some shots of the magical Icelandic scenery before Will Ferrell appeared and began speaking with a very obviously put on Icelandic accent.
You could hear a pin drop in our house before the crying began... "I don't understand Papa" said young Poppy. "That man isn't really Icelandic is he? Are you making us watch a movie that endorses Cultural Appropriation?".
I was shocked, thought about it, and conceded that yes, of course, she was right. But I said Will Ferrell is a big star, the sort of person needed to bring finance to such a project and that I was sure they'd be respectful of that culture.
She seemed to accept my explanation but did mutter that she truly believed that an Icelandic part should really be voiced by an Icelandic actor and that it was wrong.
Anyway not another ten minutes had passed before another actor appeared with a lampooning Russian accent who was quite clearly also a lazy caricature!
And then the tears began with Poppy consoling her little brother Otis who'd also burst into bitter tears of injustice. I leapt over and turned the infernal machine off there and then.
I implore any right thinking parents to seriously consider ever showing this filth to their precious offspring. This targeted making fun of people because they are different and doing "funny" foreign accents just isn't acceptable to today's society...
