Simon Pegg: ‘Star Wars’ Fandom Is the ‘Most Toxic at the Moment’ and It’s ‘Really Sad’

During a recent appearance on SiriusXM’s “Jim and Sam” radio show (via Mediaite), Pegg was asked what franchise has “the hardest fans to please.” It didn’t take long for the actor to deliver his answer: “Star Wars.”

Several “Star Wars” actors have been victims of online harassment because of toxic fans in recent years. Kelly Marie Tran had to leave social media after the release of “Star Wars: The Last Jedi” because the harassment was so bad. John Boyega has spoken openly about the racism he experienced for being a Black lead in a “Star Wars” movie. Moses Ingram just dealt with racist “Star Wars” fans due to her role in “Obi-Wan Kenobi.”

“We are proud to welcome Moses Ingram to the Star Wars family and excited for Reva’s story to unfold,” the official “Star Wars” social media accounts posted in May as a response to the racist fans. “If anyone intends to make her feel in any way unwelcome, we have only one thing to say: we resist.”

Obi-Wan Kenobi himself, Ewan McGregor, added his own statement: “It just sickened me to my stomach to hear that this has been happening. We stand with Moses, we love Moses, and if you’re sending her bullying messages, you’re no ‘Star Wars’ fan in my mind.”

“There’s no sort of like, ‘Oh, you’re suddenly being woke,’” Pegg added. “No ‘Star Trek’ was woke from the beginning, you know? … This is massively progressive. ‘Star Wars’ suddenly there’s, there’s a little bit more diversity and everyone’s kicking off about it. And it’s, it’s really sad.'”

Strange that Moff Gideon and Carl Weathers from the Mandalorian got no backlash from these imaginary toxic SW fans, neither did Mace Windu or Lando. Can race baiting Disney shills explain this?

Also, the "Star Trek was always dat way!" crowd hate Captain Kirk for his "toxic" masculinity and see the often sexy female Trek characters as deeply offensive even though Trek has always been THAT way. Simon Pegg can go get pegged by his boyfriend.

My theory about the toxic asshole fans is that they love Star Wars because it features their secret fantasy - that of a male virgin getting superpowers. Everything else about the series goes over their heads, including the lessons about good and evil! (And yeah, these toxic asshole worst fans all have Luke as their favorite character. )

Pegg is a real long-term fan, BTW. I saw an interview with him, where he said he became best buds with Nick Frost, because Frost could perfectly imitate the little roller Droid on the Death Star that Chewie roars at.

Star Wars 1977 starring Luke Skywalker got a Best Picture Oscar nomination, but the one Pegg was in didn't because it was a low quality cash grab.

That doesn't make Pegg wrong about the toxic fans.

Or maybe people didn't like Reva because she was annoying, and not acted very well.

Fancy that!

Nah, it's just a coincidence that people suddenly turned "toxic" the moment a bad actress was in the spotlight.

I saw it a second time, and I don't think she gave a bad performance overall. Sure, she wasn't cool or likeable, but she was playing a character who was 100% bitch! No charm, no light moments, no entertainingly camp villainy, even her tiny moments revealing qualities that might make her redeemable only made her angrier! No, she was playing someone who was always, ALWAYS in a state of rage, which is something most actors are not willing to do. Most actors want to make their characters likeable, sympathetic, or cool, but Ingram didn't want to go there, so I give her credit for committing to an interesting and original performance.

She's an unsettling person to watch, and I wonder what the hell they're going to do with her in S2.

That's a fair interpretation, and I can see why you and others would have it. But mjne was that she was just an annoying shouty lady 🤣 I didn't feel any ill-will toward Ingram, and I'd bet nor did most who voiced their dissatisfactiln with her in the role. (Which I didn't, not in any way targeted toward her personally)

I don't insist that you agree with my views on her work.

I just insist that anyone who uses racist language to describe her or who sends her personal abuse, needs to be STUFFED WITH NAILS.
