The ending is f@cking ridiculous ... (spoilers)

and ruins an otherwise very good film.
There would be multiple investigators involved, police supervisors, multiple police agencies, probably the FBI once it became an "abduction" case, the District Attorney's Office. Analysts would be pouring through cell phone, internet information. People would be where is this data, where is that data, why don't we have this yet?
One corrupt investigator would not be able to thwart an investigation by pretending that certain things had been done.
This derailed the movie for me.

I agree. And even though she had the lead on the investigation which would enable her to be deceitful to cover up her crime, anyone under her would have to question her sloppy methods in the investigation

Yeah the ending was kooky but the movie was put together so brilliantly

I'd agree with everything you said except that it was an otherwise good movie. I thought it was trash from the beginning.

really? i thought it was the best "desktop thriller" so far.

I watched it last night and thought it was pretty good.

The first act is actually excellent. The rest of the film doesn't quite live up to it, but the movie is still solid overall.

One of the more interesting films I saw in 2018 and possibly even a Top 10 entry for that year.

Agreed. I thought the first 3/4 of the film were excellent. It was the hacking of emails and the research method that was particularly fascinating to watch. The new information kept coming, keeping the viewers on the edge, wanting to find out what the heck was going on. I showed the first 40 minutes to my students and they were all standing up with anticipation at the end of 40 minute mark. And then - the horrible ending with tons of holes ruins it (I haven't shown the rest of the film to the students).

I figure if they had stopped at him finding her dead - this film would have been a contender for the best film of the year. In fact, the good ending feels tacked on, which would explain why it has so many holes. Who knows - maybe they did an audience check and people did not like the 'she's dead' ending?

Agreed. Having his daughter be alive at the end was heart-warming, but highly unrealistic. Perhaps if the "perpetrator" ending was not just as bad, or worse, the former could be a bit easier to swallow (and vie versa)... But to do both really dropped this movie, for me, from like a 7 or maybe even 8 to a 5 or 6.

I didn't mind the daughter surviving.

I did mind the red herring brother sub-plot though - it didn't advance the plot at all and felt like filler. Arguably it explained how out-of-touch the father'd become but it wasn't remotely necessary.

For me it saved the movie because I was thoroughly bored after 10 minutes of watching a PC screen for what seemed like eternity.however just cause I liked ending doesn't mean it was good

I actually preffered the brother twist than the detective twist. Most are murdered by people they know, especially family members.

This was just so farfetched.

And police would have gone through all of those messages not the father. But hey, it's a movie.

Yeah the ending definitely brings it down a lot.

It honestly would have been way better if it was the brother or a random catfish and then kinda ending showing the investigator wasn’t actually doing her job properly and was just useless. People would notice her trying to shift people away from stuff and that would stand out. Incompetence though people are more likely to let that slide or not notice it until it’s to late.
