CGI teenagers ruined this!

So they got the original cast to come back and do new scenes. Problem being, they've gone through puberty and have aged drastically.

Richie (the kid from stranger things) looks like a horror creation of his own in some scenes as his face morphs into strange shapes.

The actor went from boyish chubby cheeks to skinny face and the CGI crew have horribly tried to give him back his chubby cheeks.

The others were better but that's not saying much.

Oh, and we have a mortal Kombat arcade machine in a 1989 arcade in clear view. How anyone didn't realise that putting a 90s iconic game in an 80s arcade was a sin of period set design is beyond me.

reply

Hmm. Well, they said Wolfhard had aged the most, and he has, from what I've seen on Stranger Things Season 3.
But this is still a bit worrying. Then again, Eddie's voice will have broken by now, so it'll be strange to see Jack Dylan Grazer sort of look young but sound like himself from Shazam!
I don't give a toss about the arcade machine, to be honest, as there were some 2017 cars in 1989 as well.

reply

You mightn't 'give a toss' as you so eloquently put it, but I do! 89 and 93 were two very different eras as far as I'm concerned.

reply

Like 2 different worlds for sure.

reply

Exactly. It would be like seeing a Michael Jackson Thriller Album in a movie set in the disco era of the late 70s.

reply

Maybe Derry got an early preview of the game? There, now you don't have to worry about a small inconsequential piece of set design in a horror movie.

reply

The mortal kombat machine was in the 1989 scenes too? I thought it was street fighter in 89 and then a mortal kombat machine in present day when richie was walking around the old abandoned arcade building.

reply

I saw the movie just now: when the whole Losers Club as kids go into a photo booth for group photos, they pass a Mortal Kombat machine. I couldn't really see the name of the game, and if I hadn't been told about it, I wouldn't have known any better.

reply

Well for people like me who loved that game, I can see the big Johnny Cage on the side, the words 'mortal kombat' and the actual game being played was Mortal Kombat.

reply

Put it this way: I never played it on arcade, so I wouldn't know. And I was born in 1972, so old enough to know of such things.

reply

It looked fine to me. I assumed they had shot additional footage the first time around.

reply

What would have been most logical is to film the necessary scenes to the second movie while the characters were still younger and eliminate the need to alter anything later on. After all, they knew there was going to be a part 2 and Im sure they reasonably knew what material would be needed for flashback scenes. This would have eliminated the need to recreate scines from older Derry and a time past, and simply focus on the present. They could have shot extra material and just use what they needed to and disregard what wasnt needed.
It seems they didnt plan ahead knowing full well they would need these scenes for part 2.

reply

I recall at the time chapter one came out, there was no guarantee there would be a second film. They wanted to wait and see what response the film got before green-lighting a sequel That said, it didn't matter because any CGI done to de-age the kids is invisible to the viewer.

reply

I certainly didn't notice anything. But I think I would've if they HADN'T de-aged the kids, it just would've looked weird (it's meant to be the same time of year as the first movie, but they've obviously aged).

reply

I knew of the CGI going in but honestly, hardly even noticed it. I think people are making too big of a deal about this.

reply

I have a higher intelligence for facial recognition obviously. I can smell a rat.

reply

They all looked fine to me.

reply
