Why did they move to California?

We are told at the beginning of Karate kid that they are moving to California from New Jersey because his mom got a new job. But later she is working as a waitress and they are living in a junk apartment.

What if she wasn't moving due to a job but for some other reason. Like running from trouble type of thing

Would be a fun storyline for Cobra Kai. Danny exploring why his mom really left NJ or maybe the trouble finally finds them type of thing

I’ve heard there was a deleted scene where the company she went to work for went under and she had to get a job as a waitress across the street.

That's the first thing I thought of that must've happened. Just an easy and logical explanation to their circumstance.

Wasn't that actually in the movie? I thought she said that in the restaurant.

She might've alluded to it but there was a scene where we would've seen her actually leaving the company.

Maybe the reason they moved to California at the start of Karate Kid is because his mom maybe tried to work things out with Kreese, who she had an affair with while Kreese was in NJ, but he wanted no part of the situation. Maybe at the end of season 4, Daniel discovers that Kreese is his father

He moved from Newark, NJ. If you know what Newark's like then you might understand why he would move. Even that crummy apartment in Cali is better than the living conditions of Newark. I'd assume something unexpected happened with the job she was promised and had to take up waitressing, but regardless the move would make sense even if it was just to get out of Newark.
