Here's how they should have ended it.

Ian peeks through the rubble and sees his dad embrace Barley, then the light of the setting sun gets in his eyes and he slides down. He manages to get out himself, all sad and dejected because his dad is gone. He climbs out and sees Barley and their dad standing there arm in arm! The combination of the botching of the first spell and the success of the second has made the restoration of the dad permanent.

I agree. Would have been better. I know I know everybody would say "the message of the story is that he still has his brother" blah blah blah. I know it was a happy ending and all but... MEH. I had it in my head early on that if he doesn't get to see his Dad I'm gonna be disappointed... and... I was disappointed.

reply

Yeah, that would have been a much worse and more predictable ending.

reply

Perhaps, but at least it wouldn't have left me depressed and made my kid cry. Is there a law that says all Pixar movies must now have bummer endings? Maybe a happy one would actually be less predictable.

reply

Agree.

Or he should have at least been allowed to talk to his father just like his brother did.
I really don't get what kind of message that awful ending was trying to send, but it completely ruined the movie for me.

Probably something Progressive and Empowering like "Dads aren't really necessary!"

reply

That is not likely since dads are important in many Pixar movies including this one.
But that ending was really weird and awful...
