Let's talk about all the cameos/smaller parts

Pitt and DiCaprio were spectacular, yes.

But what about the smaller parts played by Kurt Russell, Bruce Dern, Timothy Olyphant, Luke Perry, Michael Madsen (although his part was very small), Nicholas Hammond, Dakota Fanning, Damian Lewis, Al Pacino, Emile Hirsch, Mike Moh and even Lena Dunham.

I am probably leaving somebody out, but who were your favorites of the smaller parts?

My clear favorite was Nicholas Hammond as the cowboy movie director. He was great in the part. I also liked Bruce Dern, Timothy Olyphant, Kurt Russell, Emile Hirsch and I was impressed by Dakota Fanning. Al Pacino was also good here, with the benefit of being directed by a good director again. Ultimately, everyone delivered in the film.

I bet Dicaprio grew up watching Spiderman on TV (he's of that age when hed have been young/old enough to be watching Spiderman and Hulk on TV) so it must've been pretty cool working with the 'original' Spiderman (Dicaprio was attached to the role for a while back in the 90s when James Cameron was going to direct..and of course he used to hang out with Toby Maguire) he must be so used to working with the usual big name A listers its probably fun to work with the cult/forgotten figures from yesteryear, and of course it must be absolutely amazing for those cult guys to be on the big screen again (sometimes for the first time in decades) in a huge QT film in scenes with the huge stars of today .. plus its fun for the (geek) audience to see huge A listers like Pitt & Dicaprio in scenes with those guys (happens all the time in QT movies of course)

I thought Fanning was great. I completely lost her in that character.

Maya Hawke (Ethan and Uma's daughter) was one of the Manson cult members and seen at near the end.

She was the one who had second thoughts on carrying out the murders and drove the car away.

And the main hippy gal that Brad Pitt keeps noticing is Margaret Qualley, Andie MacDowell's daughter.

reply

Qualley's a great looking gal; I think she was in Mad Men (?) but I would have to check. Maybe it was Feud, that Betty Davis / Joan Crawford mini-series. Pretty sure I saw her before Once in H'wood.
Can't say she's a great actress, and she may be, but her character sure was funny.

reply

Ah ! Now that I bothered to look, I see she was in Fosse / Verdon, so that makes sense.

reply

I didn't know it was Andies daughter, but I definitely see it now.

Pacino was awesome, I thought. His character was so far outside the type of character he normally plays, that I didn't know he had that in him. Always looked up to the guy as the great actor from some of the greatest films, and it was kind of a treat seeing him become an entirely different person from who you normally recognize him as, you know?

Yeah the others were fine, in roles that were more cameos than anything, but Pacino really stood out to me, personally. Really liked his style with that character.

reply

you always looked up to Pacino?
are you a midget?

reply

Its a great overall cast, alright -- QT managed to line up two major current stars(Leo and Brad), one legend(Pacino -- he makes straight-to-video stuff now but you can't take his history away from him) and an array of faces old and new, all perfectly cast to play their parts.

Dakota Fanning impressed me. Its always a risk, how a child star will grow to adulthood. She's not the cute little crier of War of the Worlds anymore, she's not cute at all -- but she nailed the "drill sergeant boss" nastiness of a young woman who seems to be Charlie Manson's "enforcer," ordering all of his hippie minions around and saying of Pitt, "I'll handle this."

I also liked this exchange:

Fanning: When was the last time you saw (George Spahnn)?
Pitt: Oh, about 8 years ago.
Fanning:(With bile) Oh..I didn't know you were so CLOSE.

Fanning later bitingly calls Pitt "Hey, Mr. 8 Years Ago"...a classic QT phrasing.

They were all excellent, as was the film!

😎

Agreed.

Detail: Brenda Vacarro gets billing in this. She plays Al Pacino's wife, and I think all we see of her is the back of her head when they show Pacino and his wife watching the "Rick Dalton film festival."

Interesting, thanks.

I had no idea who Squeaky was until you said Dakota. She was great, and the girl Pussy was as well.

reply

"We all love Pussy."

"Yes, we do."

I thought I recognized Bruce Dern and Al Pacino.... I can always recognize Pacino by his voice. Didn't recognize Olyphant, Russell or Hirsh.
