What's your predictions for this film?

I think it's great that Quentin is making a film about Charles Manson. This should be interesting. I'm really glad to see that Quentin is stepping away from Western themed story lines this time, and has at least decided to try something different.

But what are your predictions for the film? How do you think it'll turn out?

reply

I think it will be great and get some Oscar nominations.

reply

The cast in a QT flick is always impressive. I'm very excited to see it.

reply

I don't think this one is gonna light people up the way QT's other features have. I expect lots of unenthusiastic praise quickly forgotten. I think QT is gonna get out of his safe zone and attempt a more mature straight forward narrative with less of his trademark gonzo filmmaking. But still keep things cool enough for everybody to enjoy it. Critics will praise his growth.

reply

No evidence this is mainly a Manson film. Main characters are invented: Booth and Dalton, neighbours of Tate. A cast of 120, only 12 are Manson + family. Official description:
In 1969 Los Angeles, around the time of the Charles Manson murders, a TV actor and his stunt double embark on an odyssey to make a name for themselves in the film industry. [4]

OTOH: Manson and Spahn are in it, so part of it is on the Ranch.

reply

I predict more Western elements than you seem to expect.

reply

My prediction was correct. It's a Western within a Western within a Western. And an amazing one at that.

reply

It sounds like Manson will be more of a side plot. I'm just curious as to how the murders will go down on film. I can see QT not wanting to do it soft, and so hitting a point where he'll be critiqued for stylizing the murders too much. Or, maybe to avoid that, or just to avoid having that plot take complete center stage, it could end up happening off-screen, or maybe we just hear them.

reply

How the murders will be handled is the big "what if?" of the film that will drive interest in it right up until release. Its a huge, disturbing hook.

But I would like to note that my anticipation is for something that we won't know until we see and hear this movie: what are all these great actors going to get to SAY? To me -- even in these years where he has proved a great director of action -- the key to a Tarantino movie is the dialogue, the back and forth, the long soliloquy, the famous phrase . The "period" photographs of Pitt, Leo, Pacino and Robbie are great, but its what they are going to say that is going to matter.

reply

It’s going to be a success. Both critically and financially.

That’s my best guess. I will be surprised if it doesn’t turn out great or simply isn’t a quality film that gets met with praise by critics.

reply

Perry's death is what propels the film financially if it makes anything. He was known to several generations (X and millennials) who have spending money for an afternoon at the movies. And his death was very substantively covered in news bc of the circumstances--non-criminal/accidental, big current TV show lost main cast member.

I doubt even w his name on it that the film would generate much otherwise. Would have been a 'niche' project. But this is the last project he worked on.

reply

Not to downplay Perry’s appeal, but I think it’s safe to say the teaming of Leonardo DiCaprio & Brad Pitt alone will attract plenty of attention to this film (it already has actually). And in spite of its subject matter, I honestly don’t see this film generating any less interest than Tarantino’s last few films did (which were all successful). Tarantino films in general generate a lot of interest, and this one particular film he has on the way will star powerhouse actors like DiCaprio & Pitt — famously sharing the screen for the first time. Not to mention there are other big names involved in this film.

So, unless it fails to win over audiences, then as far as I’m concerned this film has hit written all over it.

reply

Those others really aren't in the news for anything 'different' besides the movie.

Yes they're working together--and I was (admittedly) very impressed with DiCaprio in the the Eastwood piece on Hoover.

Generating interest isn't the same as generating money. Batman and Robin had tons of marketing behind it and had Schwartzenegger and Clooney attached but tanked at the box office.

It's what kind of marketing you do which really counts.

reply

I predict LetthemEatCake will turn up declaring that 1969 is not the golden age of hollywood , and that Tarantino is a hack.

reply

It's not considered the "Golden Age". He/she wouldn't be wrong on that piece of info.

reply

True , but we dont need him turning up on every film outside that period to mention it! That and his obsession with orange

reply

LOL I've seen LetthemEatCake post many things and I laugh thinking, how can he think that. I think he's on a higher horse than most of us.

That's a lot of " I think's" I'm a bit dizzy.
