How realistic is the level of extreme, overt racism in this show?

I'll start off believing that there was overt racism and segregation against black travelers, and it might have been difficult to obtain services in many rural communities. Plus, Sundown Towns were a real phenomenon.

That being said, did any kind of stop immediately result in being chased by armed civilians trying to kill you? I'd guess the most likely phenomenon would have been being just refused service and told to leave town by local police.

I'd also wager that other than stopping for gas, most Blacks wouldn't have even bothered trying to eat in small town diners or gain hotel rooms. They would pack picnic lunches and only stop in larger cities known to have black populations and some kind of safe harbor or hotels known to accept Blacks.

I also thought the trap set by the sheriff near the end of episode 1 was a bit unrealistic. What's he going to do, "I solved the two thefts by executing 3 African Americans in the woods after dark"? I'm not sure its a plausible outcome, even if your county's citizens are racist.

I feel like this show would be actually scarier if the white people were less obviously monsters, and their hostility and violence was much more implied than over-the-top overt. It would make things a lot more chilling and frightening, especially if they segued from "scary, intimidating white cop" to "Lovecraftian monster", making you wonder if there was some literal connection.

It would be scarier if this was handled the way it wasn’t in real life? Hmm. I mean, perhaps that would work if the show (like the source material) wasn’t going for realism in this aspect.

But yo, when it’s mostly the white reich wing revisionist brigade and a sell out or two “waaah everything that challenges and triggers me is evil woke sjw! Diversity and equality is white genocide! Sheep! Climate and the chyyyna flu issa hoax! Fake news! My actual feelings over your facts!” debating the authenticity of this. Typical but SMDH. It’s the real propagandists screaming propaganda as always.... hardcore reich wing projection.

But how realistic? Very, very realistic. Let us begin... fact-checked history books and the numerous Emmett Tills from back in the good ol’ “anti-pc” days (actually very PC days for reactionary privileged white bros) and even these days aside, why not look up what’s been going on with those small dick energy armed reich wingers that have been showing up at BLM/pro-social justice protests ready to HUNT? “Waaaa BLM are terrorists! All lives matter, even the ones I want to eliminate and also eat! Protest police brutality peacefully by taking a knee? REEEEE TRAITORS! Broke a window and looted? You’re all the same savages! Your lives mean nothing compared to property! Only us white bros are allowed to destroy shit, like when our favorite sports teams win! F BLM!!!”... IMAGINE how their hate-filled and bootlicking kind would have rolled back in the pre-60’s Civil Rights days. They would have made a killing back in the day! (Literally.) Or hell... look at this board or any board dedicated to supposed woke material (give me that glorious reich wing-disapproved material over maga cultist and fascist news material anytime!) and read the cliche AF but always asinine anti-social justice rants by bigot ‘Murica first chuds. Unrealistic overt racism, huh? Yeah, it’s all fake news deep state propaganda! Q’s R Us! 🙄

Ignorance is truly bliss for the projecting regressive. I’m out

The first rule of "Fight Club" is to not talk about it. Similarly, for all these far "reich" white supremacist suspects, the first rule is denying white supremacy/anti black racism at every turn & like the sniveling cowards they are, hide the overt racism of their constant whining about black people behind the "plausible deniability " of transparent dog whistles & other coded language.

Given the fact that George got indignent in that diner I think that was a realistic outcome. We didn't get the full conversation that the waiter had on the phone. If he told that man everything that George had said I don't doubt that they would have come there shooting.

There are quite a few stories about blacks "rampaging" through small towns. Usually the rampaging blacks don't live to tell their side of the story but they could have just as easily been some black person who just wanted to sit down and eat at some diner or stop somewhere and they ended up having to shoot their way out of a small town.

People today can't really understand that level of racism because the word is just flung around so freely now. Whole towns would routinely watch innocent black people (sometimes children) be lynched and they would laugh and carry on as if it was this festive event. This isn't today when somebody gets killed for tussling with an officer and trying to run away and they call it racism.

Even Gemran prisoners of war were suprised at just how badly America treated blacks.

Seriously? Of course that trap as unrealistic. But it's extremely probable. Any excuse to kill and lynch someone black back then was totally acceptable, even if it was for just a minor theft. And it wouldn't make a difference at all who truly did it.
