WOW - bored by it
This would impress someone below the age of 20-25 I suppose. For anyone over 30 though, it's one big yawn.
i. This style of jump-cut hyper-kinetic directing got old back back in the days of those CRANK movies more than a decade ago.
ii. The basic premise -- society watching a death match played out online -- is old. REALLY, REALLY old if you wanna go back to the original Death Sport. Which wouldn't be a bad thing, if they did anything interesting with the presentation, or the plot. But they don't.
iii. The villains. How many times have we seen the emo-/cyberpunk black leather and face warpaint thing done in movies like this? One of the rare funny bits is when one of the bad guys makes a joke about it to the head bad boss, only to pay for his insolence a minute later.
iv. The pseudo-villain Nix. Ugh. The bad-ass light-as-a-feather waif who can outgun and outfight a roomful of guys is so old that it's a movie trope. Furthermore, she isn't even consistent in this movie. After showing us how deadly fast and accurate she is in her first scene, suddenly she can't take out one nerd running around like a trapped squirrel in his apartment. Variations of this scene are repeated several times. Then, in the final hallway scene -- a ripoff of the Matrix hallway scene -- she's suddenly Trinity again.
(I will admit that Samara Weaving does look smokin'...)
v. Awful music. The bland soundtrack recycles a bunch of obvious 70s and 80s tunes. At this point, You Spin Me Round by Dead or Alive, should be banned from being used in a movie ever again.
vi. Daniel Radcliffe gets a point or two for trying something way outside his wheelhouse. The bit he does with comedian Rhys Darby is the funniest part of the movie. It would have been better to have the whole movie revolve around these two.
This is the sort of movie you can put on as background noise when you are doing more important things around the house. You can come back to it every 10 or 15 minutes, and you will have missed nothing important or noteworthy.
