I'd say it's not unheard of, but usually the numbers are closer than they are here.
shareI suppose how one defines "disparity" here matters, but it's not uncommon to see a movie well-received by critics disliked by the audience and vice versa. I agree the difference between scores at RT is larger than you usually see, but only 750 users rated it there, a rather small sample. Over at IMDB it has a 6.6 score with over 9.6K user ratings.

I went ahead and watched it tonight and thought it was a solid 7.5! Good for Ron Howard. It was certainly more interesting than Solo!
Whether 750 user ratings on a site can ever be representative of a general audience I don't know, but the RT and IMDB scores do differ. And critics certainly have their biases, many of which they no doubt share.
Glad you liked it. I know of the book and have heard its author interviewed a few times so maybe I'll have a look myself.
If a sample size of 750 is good enough for accurate election polls it should be good enough to tell if this is an objectively good movie.

Sadly, in this latter stage of his career Ron Howard is not getting the respect that he deserves.
Rush was a fucking great movie and is perhaps the best racing movie of all time. In the Heart of the Sea was an interesting film that at least deserved more credit than it got. And after watching Hillbilly Elegy last night, I can say the same thing about that one.
