Remember when good movies won Best Picture?

I miss the days when movies like The Godfather, One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest, Unforgiven, Schindler’s List, Silence of the Lambs, Patton, Rocky, The Departed, Forrest Gump, Platoon, etc won Best Picture. You know actual great movies that will be remembered forever not overrated shit like this movie, Green Book, The Artist, Moonlight, Nomadland, etc that people have already forgotten about

reply

I haven't seen EEAAO yet but in general I agree. This is the weakest decade in film making that I can remember and I even enjoy films from the silent film era. Too much focus on nice visuals, high pace and gimmicks. Watching a film should feel like reading a good book again. It did in the 70's and that is what I still consider the greatest age of film making.

reply

You can't agree if you haven't seen EEAAO, lol.

reply

The implication of calling films like Green Book, The Artist, Moonlight and Nomadland overrated is that oscar winning films in general have gotten worse. I can agree with that without having seen EEAAO.

reply

NO OFFENSE...BUT...YOU'RE OLD...AS AM I AT THIS POINT...WE HAVE OUTLIVED OUR GOLDEN ERAS IN EVERYTHING...BITCHING ABOUT IT JUST ENDS UP SOUNDING LIKE MY FATHER'S PARENTS RAILING AGAINST THE DEVILISH BEATLES.

reply

If only contemporary films could be called "devilish". That would be something of interest.

And actually my favorite films are mostly from before my time. The 70's aren't actually "my time" anyway: I was 7 in 1980.

reply

BORN IN THE 70'S...MAKING THE 70S/80S YOUR SWEET SPOT FOR CLASSICS AND FAVORITES.

I WAS BORN IN 81...THE 80S AND THE 90S ARE MY SWEET SPOT.

reply

I totally agree.

Oscars are SHIT PAINTED WITH GOLD.
Like any other "award" for art.
The amount of oscars given to this mediocre movie speaks for itself.

reply

I walked out of this one after about 45 minutes.

reply

This movie is shit and Oscars are a joke. An academy full of retards who only care about the ethnicity of the people involved in the film, i.e. not old white male, believing they're doing social justice while patting themselves on the back and boasting about their equitability at parties with other white people. They wouldn't know a good movie if one blew up their fucking gonads.

A plague of pustulant boils upon all their scurvid asses

Green Book is a great movie. Agree on the others!

You must be really young, because there have always been controversial wins like this. One example that immediately comes to mind is The Greatest Show on Earth. That's usually the movie that everyone points to as a mediocre film getting best Oscar.

Forrest Gump is not a good picture, BTW.

reply

On which planet is Forrest Gump not a good movie? That film has everything.

reply

The movie is a ripoff of several better movies that did what it was trying to do, except better--Being There and Zelig. If you've seen these films, you'll see how unoriginal and watered down FG was.

The movie is also incredibly cynical and not true to life, and to me it deserves points off for that alone. You can have a fanciful movie based around fantasy and unrealistic situations, but IMO, it's bad storytelling when the thing isn't grounded in any way or it sells a bogus message.

reply

You mention two movies that are totally dissimilar to the 1994 oscar winner for best picture.

Being There is an incredible film, but nothing like Forrest Gump. It doesn't have the same rock songs on the soundtrack. It doesn't take you on a journey through some of the biggest historical events of the 20th century. The film has none of the sentimentality that Forrest Gump has.

Zelig – a black and white movie made by the great Woody Allen, might have more parallels to Forrest Gump. It uses same type of special effects, and also has the historical aspect, but still so different in tone and style.

Forrest Gump - I have seen the film many times, and I have never - not once - felt that the film is cynical or has a bogus message.

reply

LOL. Forrest Gump is legendary movie. And it is great,

Those films didn't have Chinese money behind the awards or the need to appease the Chinese box office. The film is shit. utter shit. Short Round beat out Brendan Gleeson for best supporting LOL...I mean W.T.F.??? Ke Huy Quan hasn't shown an ounce of actorial growth since Indiana Jones.
