I gotta say this new trailer looks pretty fucking great! I wasn't that impressed with the first trailer but after this I'm getting excited to see this in the theater.

reply

it looks slightly less terrible

Still crap.

reply

It honestly looks pretty good. The only problem is it's all rehash. I've seen all this shit before. They've done all these scenes before. They're just putting a slightly different spin on it.

reply

Agreed

reply

I gotta say though, Linda Hamilton is looking old as f*ck. I mean, my mother is actually two years older than her and looks much better, and I wouldn't even say that my mother is particularly well-preserved.

reply

She's prematurely aged and has looked like that for years now. I don't know if it was too much sun, bad genes, medical problems or what, but this is not normal aging for someone of her age.

reply

It's a shame. I rewatched Dante's Peak recently and she was still pretty attractive in that. That was '98.

20 years later and she almost looks like a different person.

reply

Time can do that. I was shocked last week having seen a picture of Sean Connery, now aged 89:-
https://thelifeandtimesofhollywood.com/sean-connery-007-celebrates-his-89th-birthday-with-his-family/

... and then seen him in that League of Extraordinary Gentlemen film on the telly a couple of nights later. 17 years difference but just shows you, Sean was still doing alright until his early 70s.

Time catches up with us all in the end I guess, there's no escaping death.

reply

Yeah, that picture of Connery is pretty crazy. He's so much thinner these days. It seems that people can continue to look pretty good up until about the time they hit 80 but then they start to deteriorate very quickly.

Then again, I recently saw William Shatner on a new show on History and he looks pretty damn good for 88. He's aged well.

Makes you wonder what immortals like Tom Cruise and Keanu Reeves are going to look like when they get into old age.

reply

[deleted]

Yeah, good for him.

I've heard he's kind of an asshole to fans but I wish him well nonetheless.

reply

Just looks the same as the last trailer. Crap

James Cameron willing to retcon the entire franchise for the sake of diversity and inclusivty.

The media will latch onto this in a heartbeat and the moment it is released will call anyone who doesn't like it "A sexist, woman hating, misogynist", or "Basement dwelling trolls who are afraid of strong woman".

You know the usual tripe.

reply

I used to think like that too in regards to this film but to be honest, although no more terminator movies would be nice, I think this film could be one of the better movies post-T2.

Mexico has always been a theme in the first two terminator movies... Sarah went there at the end of T1 and in T2 to hide out at Enrique's place for a while. So its not out of the realm of possibility that the movie would have Mexican protagonists... plus I doubt Sarah could risk living for too long in USA as she is still probably wanted by authorities after her indirect involvment in the 1984 police station massace and all the chaos that happened in T2...

I do understand where ur coming from though... I mean whats the odd that its a mexican woman in the lead, especially in todays political climate? I get that completely but who knows, it may actually be good. Im not some dumb fan who will take anything they give us... Its just the new green and red band trailer was much better but the film could still be overall shit..

I wouldn't say he has retconned anything really as far as I can see. I mean, the legacy of T1, T2 and John Connor is still preserved. The first two films arent completely pointless if you think about it. John's importance in the future disappeared the moment Sarah and co. blew up Cyberdyne. He would no longer have any importance in the future, nor would SkyNet. I think this is a clever way to keep the franchise going: preserve the legacy of the first two (and best) films and just add onto it's lore in an alternate future (one ran by Legion).
There isn't really any other direction to continue from T2. A future war movie is possible but we all know what happens in the SkyNet future already.

Thanks for your thoughts! :)

What a load of millennial anti-SJW culture warrior garbage. What a load of tripe. Cameron has always had diverse casts in his movies. Man, I hate your generation. So ignorant, so stupid, just throwbacks to the Archie Bunker era.

reply

So Terminator was about a "MAN" who would lead "MANKIND" to safety and winning the war against machines built by "MAN".

But now all that never happened. John is killed so the future we saw never happens but does happen with a "woMAN" who is now the saviour. Strange that. Why didn't he do that 20 years ago, why now when the going trend is to gender swap male roles to female roles.

Really Cameron has always had diverse casts, has he really, should we take a look at that statement. Below is his directorial achievements.

Titanic - All white cast.
Terminator 2 - All white cast except Miles Dyson family
The Terminator - All white cast except "Lieutenant Ed Traxler"
The Abyss - All white cast except "One Night"
Aliens - All white cast except "Apone" (Apologies, also a marine i can't remember the name)

The only ones that even come close to diverse would be Avatar and True Lies and that was only the case due to the story involved.

So please don't go spouting nonsense like "Cameron has always had diverse casts in his movies" which is obviously untrue.

Also based on a forum you seem to know how old i am, i find that very strange or are you just making assumptions like the rest of the reply. No substance just assumptions. As a matter of fact if i was to class myself like you stated which i really don't need to do but for sake of conversaion i would be "GenX". Kinda puts an end to your assumption doesn't it.

I had high hopes but the film looks awful. I don't see anything resembling an interesting story and it seems like they weren't sure if they wanted to make a live-action film or an animated one.

My hope was that Cameron would return the series to something that felt similar to T2, grounded in the real world with lots of awesome practical stunts, but no, he's too enamored with visual effects now.

reply

Agreed on that... I would have preferred something closer to the feel of T1 and T2. Every T film tries to emulate the feel of T2 and fails and I don't know why they try to emulate T2. They should try emulating T1 instead... Make it a sci fi horror again for once.

reply

Were the subsequent films trying to emulate T2? If they were, they sure did a piss poor job of it.

reply

Well, T2 seems to always be called the best movie in the franchise (altho I personally disagree). When you look at T3, Salvation and Genisys, they all tried to copy every single aspect of T2. The action scenes were getting bigger and bigger, Arnold was always a good robot, things started to become more comical, there was more commercialisation (which started in T2), they tried to up the threat of the Terminator based on the T1000, the scope of the films were getting bigger and there were so much more special effects. And it didnt help with Cameron saying that every subsequent sequel was "the real sequel to T2".

With TDF, they have clearly gone this same route again... Look how much action there is in the trailers alone.. Its ridiculous... They are trying to emulate T2 again. They even have a T1000 type robot AGAIN.

For what it is, the film looks better now after that trailer but my ideal T film would be something similar to the feel of T1. Just send back one classic T800 model and watch him hunt down people in the style of a slasher movie.

reply

All the post-T2 Terminator films feel like fanfiction to me and I don't think any of them really feel like T2. I suppose some of the plot elements are similar, yes, but the overall vibe of those films is just quite different.

Regarding James Cameron's thoughts on the later sequels, I remember watching an interview where he said that he mostly only said positive things to support Arnold. He knew they were shitty. That just makes it all the more unfortunate and ironic that it now looks like he's going to add his own shitty sequel to the pile.

reply

Yeah, when you actually think about it, James Cameron was willing to lie to the fans just so his best friend Arnold can make money. Thats pretty much the simplistic way at looking at it and its quite offensive to the fans from this perspective.

I'm not really expecting this film to be worthy of the first two, but if it could do something similar to what Halloween 2018 did to the Halloween franchise, then maybe...

Cameron is a master of marketing. He could sell you a dead horse and tell you it's the next step in transport evolution or some shit!

Are you going to see TDF on opening night? I probably will out of curiosity. The red band trailer did look quite interesting, not gonna lie..

reply

Yeah, I mean I can't really blame Cameron for backing his friend, but it was definitely a situation where you needed to read between the lines of his support for the films.

My biggest problem with what I've seen so far is all the CGI. T2 used CGI in small doses to compliment what was mostly practical action. This film, however, looks really, really artificial.

Now, in some cases that can work, like in another movie Cameron produced, Alita: Battle Angel, which is a hell of a film that I highly recommend. But I don't think that approach is right for a Terminator film.

I don't know that I'll be there opening night, but I'll probably wander in at some point opening weekend. Of course even though I'm bitching about it I'm still going to go and give them my money.

reply

I completely agree. I just read a comment on the TDF trailer on youtube where someone said that CGI should only be used for things that are inhumanly possible to make. I have always said this too. That plane crash in TDF trailer which they keep showing us because its a "money shot" would be more immersive to the viewer had they just bought two toy planes, use some pyrotechnics and some low angle shots and boom, more realistic scene.
Had this been the 80s where CGI was not yet fully realised, innovation would have taken over instead. Just look at the "Making off The Terminator 1984". Everything was handmade except a few things like the laser beams from the future weapons etc and it looks amazing even till today.

One thing I admired about McG in Salvation was that he uses mostly props and little CGI unless it's necessary. And then off course, Genisys came along and CGI'd almost everything! Lol

I'll most likely write about TDF on here when I get back from seeing it.

reply

CGI has its place but when practical effects can work, they are usually more effective.

One of the best examples I can come up with is Independence Day vs Independence Day: Resurgence. Independence Day used actual models for the big destruction scenes whereas Resurgence was 100% CGI. And the 25-year-old film's effects in large part look much better than its 2016 sequel, which just feel like a cut scene from a video game.

I only watched Terminator Salvation once and I think even then I only watched about half of it. I should revisit it and really pay attention to the effects.

reply

I think Salvation was a great movie. I sound hypocritical saying this, but i feel it was more of a step in the right direction despite the fact that we all know how the Salvation trilogy (had it got greenlit) would have ended: Reese being sent back to 1984 and the humans winning the 2029 war... but I guess now that I think about it, fleshing out those dark years between 2003 and 2029 would have been interesting to see in a Salvation trilogy.

However, I loved Salvation for the references to the previous movies. It felt like real fan service and personally, I liked that.

I watched Independence Day: Resurgence once with half attention devoted to it, but I remember it looked like pure crap. I didn't like the fact they humans were just as advanced as the alien forces. I much prepared the original I.D because in that movie, humans were the underdog. I have a thing for characters where they are an underdog fighting against strong opposition with little odds!

I recommend you give Salvation a try again. I thought it was great, you will appreciate all the little details and references to the greater Terminator lore!

reply

Completely agree. The new trailer looks tons better! Still the same ole story, but the effects look awesome.
