Trump is another matter. I think they did that not just because of partisan politics, but also to do with his popularity.
Liberal democracy is about protecting the wealthy from dictatorship, and it could fail. It failed before with Hitler, he was hugely popular too and democratically elected, and then he became a dictator. I think that is one of the reasons why there is a 2 term limit for presidents in US.
So the key danger of liberal democracy is actually a popular leader, such as Trump, Putin, Erdoğan and Modi. The approval rating of western leaders is usually ranging from 35% ~ 55% and I think that is deliberate. Anyone's approval rating too high is not in the interests of the 1%, and will get a smear campaign from corporate media.
Not just Trump gets relentlessly attacked, Bill Clinton I think got that too.
And that is also why I think there is no chance Bernie Sanders could become a presidential candidate, other than his politics he is also way too popular, and it is too hard to create a sexual scandal for someone that old.
