Interpretation of the ending (spoilers, obv.)

Did she just return her girlfriend to life, and start a happy ending with her? Or does she have this young woman in her thrall?

I have noticed GLBT organizations have rated this very highly, and from the first half or more of the film I can understand why. But there is a reasonable interpretation of the plot that makes only the titular character (a monster who killed her own brother and father) gay, which would then mean she mind-controlled a straight woman to make her a captive lover. And that does not seem like it would be something GLBT people would embrace.

I think it's what she wished, so it's not genuine. In the end she seems to have decided to make what she wants a reality and be ok with it. She envisioned Anya coming up behind her and stroking her neck, then it happened. Total witchcraft.

Agreed.

i think she was finally at peace with her powers.

But is she evil at the end? Is she forcing her friend to be her lover, or did she just return her to life and let her make her own choices?

reply

Nope Hownos pretty much got it right, she's come to terms with her powers and sexuality. She's happy in her own skin.

No she's not evil, remember her parents were trying to destroy her like her grandmother. No she's not forcing her friend into a relationship, remember Anja dumped her boyfriend to get with Thelma and she made the first move. Anja loves Thelma. Thelma only fought it cause she thought it was given her fits.

She's returned as a happier person, who's in control of her powers and happy with her sexuality and relationship with Anja. It's not a dark ending.

I appreciate your input, but that's definitely not the way it resonated with me.
