Had the kind of cameos we EXPECTED to see in Dr. Strange 2....

Dr. Strange in the Multiverse of Madness was originally "rumored" to go out and cram in as many crazy Marvel actor cameos as they could, due to the premise of the story of Dr. Strange jumping from universe to universe. There were "rumors" that Tom Cruise would appear as an alternate universe Iron Man, Thomas Jane would be back as an alternate universe The Punisher, Edward Norton would return as the Hulk, blah blah blah... Most of that didn't pan out. The results were pretty underwhelming. The best cameo was probably Patrick Stewart FINALLY showing up as a comic book accurate Professor X, but I think this was tainted by Stewart "aging out of" the role and now being too old to play Professor X. That version of Professor X would have been ideal IF Stewart had played him in the 1990s!

Deadpool & Wolverine, on the other hand, was expected to bring back several actors from past X-Men movies, but THIS movie went above and beyond what we expected to see on screen, and WENT ALL OUT doing TONS of clever cameos from DECADES of different Marvel film adaptations and different studios making them. Jennifer Garner returns as Elektra, Wesley Snipes returns as Blade, Channing Tatum FINALLY gets to play Gambit (though it would have been even better if they got Taylor Kitsch back, or better yet still if they had both Gambits meet), Chris Evans returns as Human Torch from Fantastic 4 INSTEAD of playing Captain America again, Henry Cavill appears as an alternate universe Wolverine, Ant-Man's Giant Corpse shows up, Asgard Castle shows up, Spider-Man's Thwips show up, etc., etc. Plus they got back a lot of X-Men actors who hadn't played their characters in DECADES, like Ray Park as Toad and Tyler Mane as Sabretooth.

Deadpool & Wolverine went ALL OUT, while Dr. Strange 2 just teased a ton of content but only threw us a few scraps. Sam Raimi needs to take notes!

For me the wet dream was Gambit. I really didn't expect that. And I love you couldn't understand a word he said the whole time. But the cameos weren't cameos. They were actually characters in the movie with big roles. I thought for sure they'd all be blink and miss it.

I never liked the idea of Channing Tatum as Gambit (Taylor Kitsch had already established the live action version of the character, done a solid job in a bleh movie, and SHOULD have been allowed to continue).

That being said, Tatum has desperately wanted to play the role for a decade and since they finally let him do it, he really cranked it up to 11 and WAS Gambit on steroids. The guy was pretty much a living version of cartoon/comic book illustration and overdid Gambit to perfection. I didn't think he could actually do the "Gambit accent" but he freakin' nailed it with the Cajun swag and sounded like Justin Wilson on steroids.

I still prefer Taylor Kitsch's more grounded and subtle portrayal for a three dimensional, flesh and blood human being, but Tatum WAS the cartoon version come to life. Shades on how I never wanted Andrew Garfield as Spider-Man after Tobey Maguire, but he freakin' NAILED it in No Way Home.

I think that's why I loved the movie so much. Felt like a live action cartoon, a real comic come to life.

I would've loved to see those cameos but let's be real, there would've been no way in hell Marvel could've enticed Norton to come back under any circumstance given their history. Cruise seemed like a long shot as well and with a huge ego like that one, I just don't see him taking on a role for one he didn't get originally as THE Iron Man. All in all, these were fan rumors and nothing hinted on by Marvel. Deadpool's cameos were fun for the fans but disgraceful in the context of the film. MoM had a little more prestige from the jump as they were all part of the Illuminati.

I don't see why not. Has everyone forgotten the famous "reveal" at the start of Austin Powers 3 where Austin turned out to be.... Tom Cruise? He had no problem doing a cameo for that one and playing an "alternate universe" version of a character made famous by Mike Myers.

Dr. Strange 2 COULD gotten just as many surprise reveals as Deadpool & Wolverine, IF they really wanted to make an effort and push the envelope...

I don't doubt that Cruise is one for having fun on the screen (also worth mentioning Tropic Thunder as an example too). I just think in this case it differs. Downey got the part, he didn't (and I believe Cruise was first choice originally).

i just dont think they fully realised how big a deal cameos from previous Marvel incarnations and 'almost' castings would be ..i think when they realised theyd missed a trick with Dr Strange 2 (the disappoinments there wasnt more, no Cruise etc and what there was was too brief) they went full overboard with Deadpool&Wolverine lol

then again we probably lucky we got the Dr Strange Multiverse stuff anyway as the director of the first movie wanted to do a full on horror movie for the sequel. but apparently Fiege wanted to go more multiverse (esp after the hype of SM:NWH) and brought in Raimi

I think Cruise might appear in Secret Wars (or Doomsday), esp as RDJ has been revealed as playing Dr Doom so they'll need an Iron Man variant to go up against and i doubt they'll want to mess too much with RDJ Iron Mans exit in Endgame ..

And as Cruise was so heavily rumoured for Dr Strange 2 it'd feel like a let down if he didn't appear, I guess he'll have had talks for DrS2 but Fiege and TC probably figured best to save him for A:SW in a few years (where hed have a potentially bigger role than being killed off quick by Scarlet Witch)

plus I doubt Cruise will be able to resist the temptation of being in what will be potentially the biggest movie of all time

I hope so!

I dont know I'm getting sick of these fucking cameo movies. It's been non-stop for a couple years now.

Chris Evans shouting "Flame On!" as Deadpool announces he's about to shout "Avengers Assemble" brought down the house in my theater.

I could tell something was "off" about "Captain America" before he said it.

the cameos in this were insane and much more satisfying than Dr Strange 2 (which tbf was pretty impressive but felt abit of a let down at the time mainly bc of all the Cruise Iron Man rumours), couldn't ask for more satisfying than seeing likes of Evans as Johnny, Snipes Blade, Elektra, Gambit and more.. but now I'm thinking who else could've appeared.. (some were almost there due to name checks - P Stewarts Charles, Magneto, Strange, Loki etc)

Bana Hulk in the Wolverine v Hulk scene (obviously not Norton lol)

a Spiderman somewhere, probably with the 'new Avengers' team of Johnny, Blade, Elektra etc. (probably not Maguire as he's probably going to have a big role in Secret Wars so maybe Garfield.. or.. Nicolas Hammond?? if he not too old)

Jessica Alba as Sue Storm (but I guess if you only going to have one of the 2005 Fan 4 it had to be Evans, and no one would want to see any of the 2015 F4 even in this lol)

Affleck DD (but he got name checked by Elektra, you didn't need both really)

Punisher (again got name checked but would've been fun to see Thomas Jane or Dolph in the team)

Cage as Ghost Rider (apparently he had talks https://collider.com/deadpool-and-wolverine-nicolas-cage-ghost-rider/)

Lou Ferrigno as the Incredible Hulk (but I guess he'd have been turned into a bit of a joke)

Hasselhoff as OG Nick Fury (probably too obscure/deep dive even for Deadpool, but the Reynolds did make a Hasselhoff joke in either Blade Trinity or DP2 I can't remember which, I guess they were keeping away from old TV marvel anyway.. maybe even rights issues who knows )

Various other XMen from both eras (but then it probably worked better just Logan as he was essentially last of the OG Xmen with them all being dead in his timeline, similar to 'Logan' really)

Also would it have killed them to get the correct actors back for Juggernaut, Lady Deathstrike, Azazel, Toad.. ? I mean they dint have to as multiverse variants . but may as well have done..

Vinnie Jones was asked to return as Juggernaut but turned it down. They got a look alike instead. It was weird seeing the "correct", original X-Men movie series Juggernaut back when we just got a totally different (and more comic book accurate) one in Deadpool 2. They might as well brought back the original Colossus since they were going down that path.

I thought Lady Deathstrike, Azazel, and Toad WERE the original actors (Ray Park and so on) along with Sabretooth (Tyler Mane). They certainly made them LOOK close enough the originals that nobody noticed if it was a different actor.

I was half expecting General Styker to show up with all the original X-Men film characters returning.
